SPRINGFIELD, MO - What looked early on to be a classic pitchers duel turned into anything but as Springfield threw up eight runs in two innings en route to a 8-2 over the Naturals Wednesday night at Hammons Field.

Both Naturals' starter Mike Montgomery and Springfield starter Brian Broderick got through the first three frames without allowing a single baserunner.

It would be the Naturals that would strike first. With two outs in the fourth after Broderick had set down the first eleven, Eric Hosmer reached on an error and then the rehabbing Josh Fields lined a double into left center scoring Hosmer to put the Naturals up 1-0.

The Cardinals offense came alive in the bottom of the frame as Daryl Jones was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and went to third on a single by Matt Carpenter. Andrew Brown followed with an RBI single to left to tie the game at one. After a fly out, Xavier Scruggs belted a three-run homer to left center field to give the Cardinals a 4-1 lead.

In the fifth, Paulo Orlando singled into center field, stole second and singled on a base hit to right field by Anthony Seratelli to cut the Cardinals lead to two runs.

The Cardinals (33-25, 71-57) took advantage of a Naturals' miscue in the bottom of the 5th as Peter Kozma reached on an error by Seratelli at short with two outs. Matt Carpenter then tripled into right center field to plate Kozma making the score 5-2. Andrew Brown then drew a walk before notorious Naturals' killer Aaron Luna blasted another three-run homer to give Springfield a six run cushion.

All that added up to not such a great day for Montgomery (5-3), who took the loss one start after turning in a tremendous outing last week against Frisco. The tall, lanky southpaw was charged with all eight runs, although the four in the fifth were unearned because of Seratelli's error. He yielded six hits and two walks while fanning six.

Meanwhile, Broderick (9-2) turned in a complete game effort for Springfield, allowing the two runs and holding the Naturals to just four hits. He fanned five and didn't walk a batter in what was his second complete game effort on the season.

Amongst the few non-scoring highlights for the Naturals (35-23, 77-51), Eric Hosmer's ninth inning single extended his hitting streak to 12 games, and Barry Bowden turned in 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief after Montgomery departed.

The series continues Thursday night with a 7:10 P.M. start. The Cardinals will send left hander Ryan Kulik (7-2, 3.08) to the mound against left hander John Lamb (0-1, 7.94) for the Naturals. Catch the action live online or on ESPN 92.1 The Ticket.
