Spokane Chiefs News Release

Spokane, Wash. - The Spokane Chiefs claimed their second-straight win on Wednesday night at Spokane Arena as they took down the visiting Prince George Cougars, 3-2 in overtime.

After a scoreless first, Washington Capitals prospect Bear Hughes one-timed a power play goal from the left circle to give the Chiefs a 1-0 lead just over eight minutes into the second.

The Cougars responded late in the period as Koehn Zimmer was taken down on a breakaway attempt. After initially being awarded a penalty shot, video review ruled the play a goal, knotting the game up at 1-1.

Chase Bertholet regained the lead for Spokane minutes later - with 27 seconds left in the period - crashing the net on an odd-man rush to score his 15th of the season. Since being acquired by the Chiefs last month, the Manitoba native has seven goals and 11 assists for 18 points in 18 games.

It was Reed Jacobson who sealed the win for the Chiefs, scoring his first goal since returning from a leg injury that kept him out from mid-October to mid-January. On a 4-on-3 power play, defenseman Raegan Wiles fed the puck to the left corner, where Jacobson retrieved and attempted a cross-crease pass to Yannick Proske. The puck deflected off a Prince George stick and found the net, beating goaltender Tyler Brennan, who was spectacular all night for the visitors.

The win put Spokane into a tie with the Tri-City Americans for ninth place in the conference, just one point behind Victoria in the playoff race.

Mason Beaupit started in goal for Spokane and was outstanding in his own right, turning aside 27-of-29 shots faced. Brennan finished 35-for-38. Spokane went 2-for-3 on the power play while Prince George finished 1-for-3.

The Chiefs will have one day off before hosting back-to-back games this weekend, playing Kelowna on Friday and Portland on Saturday.
