Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings (30-10-2-1) got a trio of power play goals on Wednesday night as they cruised past the Medicine Hat Tigers (9-27-3-1) by a 6-2 score at Rogers Place to conclude their five-game homestand.

A fast moving first period that saw very few stoppages had just one goal in it and it came off the stick of Oil Kings defenceman Kaiden Guhle.

At 9:14 of the first period, with the Oil Kings on the power play, the Montreal Canadiens first-rounder loaded up a wrist shot from the blueline and zipped it through a maze of bodies for the game's opening goal.

The Oil Kings blew the game wide-open less than five minutes into the second period as they scored three goals in a span of 1:10.

First, Jake Neighbours had a centering pass blocked by the stick of Medicine Hat goaltender Garin Bjorklund, but the puck rode up the netminders paddle, over his shoulder and just across the goal line. Then, Jalen Luypen raced into the offensive zone after taking a pass from Carter Kowalyk at center ice and from the left-wing circle he lasered a shot between the right arm and body of Bjorklund for his second goal in as many games. Dylan Guenther extended the lead to 4-0 with his team-leading 26th goal of the year as he broke into the Tigers zone on a two-on-one rush with Carter Souch and his pass across to Souch deflected off a Tigers defenceman and into the net. Bjorklund was pulled after Guenther's goal after making eight saves on 12 shots.

The Tigers were able to get one goal back in the period as they got a favorable bounce after defenceman Daniel Baker ripped a point shot wide of the Edmonton net the puck caromed off the end boards and off an Oil Kings defender in front and into the net, Oren Shtrom would get credit for the power play marker at 8:19.

The Oil Kings had every opportunity to build upon their lead, but Tigers goaltender Beckett Langkow stopped all 18 shots he faced in the second period after replacing Bjorklund.

The Tigers were able to pull within two goals after Rhett Parsons snapped in a shot from the top of the left-circle just 3:36 into the third, but the Oil Kings rattled off a couple of power play markers a short-time later to put the game out of reach.

At 5:39 of the frame, Guenther pounded home his second goal of the contest on a one-timer from the left-circle and then at 11:51, Neighbours double dipped himself as he blasted in a one-timer of his own from the right-circle.

Kolby Hay recorded his eighth win of the season making 18 saves, while Bjorklund and Langkow combined for 41 saves in the loss. The Oil Kings went three-for-five on the power play, the Tigers were one-for-four.
