Windsor Spitfires News Release
WINDSOR, ON.
The Spitfires were looking to win two straight for the first time this season after a great win on Saturday vs Saginaw. The 67s had other ideas as both teams put on a barn-burner and a close affair ended in a narrow 6-4 defeat for the Spitfires.
It seemed like all night it was going to be a close one as once a team scored the other responded right away. In the first frame, it was the Spitfires who struck first. Just over six minutes into the game, Morneau behind the net, rimmed the puck to the point, Cristoforo took the puck and shot it towards goal. Martin in front of the net was able to tip it in for his first of the season. Unfortunately, the 67s would respond just over a minute later to tie the game. Another three minutes went by and the 67s would score to take a 2-1 lead. With under 5 minutes left in the period, the Spitfires would respond off an Ottawa turnover. Peer took the puck at the 67s blue line and fed Maillet who one-timed the puck into the back of the net. Another minute went by and the 67s would restore a one goal lead. However, we were done yet. In the final minute, the Spitfires had a powerplay and were able to tie up the game again. A Dionicio shot was blocked and landed on the stick of Christopoulos who scored on the rebound, his first of the season in his debut. Shots were 11-8 in favour of the Spitfires after 20 minutes.
In the second period, the 67s would take the lead just three minutes in on the powerplay. Just over two minutes later, the 67s would strike again to take a 5-3 lead. Less than 5 minutes later, the Spitfires would respond to pull within one. Dionicio had a great solo rush from behind his own net and shot the puck into the Ottawa end and beat everyone to it before going on the backhand for a highlight reel goal. The Spitfires trailed by one with half the game to play.
Unfortunately, the Spitfires piled on the pressure the rest of the game but could not find an equalizer. They had the net empty for the final 2:24 and gave up an empty net goal with just one second left. Ottawa would take this one 6-4.
The Spitfires are back in action on the road on Friday as they travel to Sarnia for a 7:05pm puck drop. The Spitfires then return home on Saturday to take on the Niagara Ice Dogs. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05pm.
