Spirit Split with New Jersey

The North Shore Spirit won one of two extra inning games against the New Jersey Jackals at the New Fraser Field in Lynn, MA.

In the continuation of the June 4 suspended game, the Spirit and the Jackals began 2-2 in the 12th inning. Spirit pitcher Derrick DePriest earned the win, fanning five in four innings. Third baseman Jason Startari was the hero of the game with a solo homerun in the top of the 14th inning to put the Spirit ahead 3-2. New Jersey's Matt Powell got the loss for the Jackals.

In the second game of the night, the Spirit fell to the Jackals after 13 innings of play. Lynn native Yuri Sanchez went two for three with a double and a single. Last weeks Northeast League Pitcher of the Week, Klae Calvert, pitched 10 solid innings, giving up two runs and striking out five. Calvert was relieved by Chad Bircher who picked up the loss for the Spirit.

The Jackals scored an unearned run in the bottom of the 13th inning on a Craig Conway ground out that scored Chris Rowan. Ben Grezlovski picked up win for the Jackals, pitching the final four innings of the game.

Tomorrow, the Spirit will play a doubleheader against Jackals with the first game beginning at 5:00 p.m. Gates open at 4:00 p.m. The Spirit will send John Kelly (4-0) and Mike Hoyt (0-1) to the mound and Allentown will send Trevor Marcotte (3-2) and Joe Magri (2-2) to face the Spirit.
