
Bears Rally Falls Short in 6-5 Loss to Nashua

NEWARK, NJ, June 20-Danny Clyburn flied out to the warning track in center field with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom half of the ninth inning as the Newark Bears lost to the Nashua Pride, 6-5, Friday night at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. The loss dropped the Bears record to 23-22 on the season.
Pride relief pitcher Kevin Lovingier walked Rickey Henderson, Paul Esposito and Michael Coleman, sandwiched around a pair of outs, in the ninth inning. After falling behind Clyburn 1-0, Lovingier induced Clyburn to fly out to the warning track to end the game.
With the scored tied 5-5 in the 8th inning, Nashua catcher Damian Sapp hit his league-leading 13th home run of the season leading off against Bears right-hander Jaime Navarro to give Nashua a 6-5 lead. Sapp finished the night 3-4 with the home run, a double and RBI on the night.
Navarro (1-1) battled to keep the Bears in the game all night long. He allowed 6 runs on 10 hits while striking out 9 batters and walking two. The Bears did rally from a 5-3 deficit to tie the game, 5-5, in the 7th inning on an RBI single by Mike Piercy and a solo home run by Coleman.
Piercy was 3-5 with a double and an RBI; while Coleman went 3-4 with the home run, his 4th, a double and an RBI. Eddie Lara was 2-4 with 2 runs scored for the Bears.
The Bears and Pride will play the middle game of their three-game series Saturday night at The Den beginning at 6:05 PM. Tim Keinath (1-2) pitches for the Bears and Paxton Crawford (4-4) goes for the Pride.
