Brockton Rox News Release

Brockton, MA (August 7, 2007) --The North Shore Spirit scored four runs against a pair of Brockton Rox relievers in the top of the tenth inning for their fifth straight win as the Rox fell 5-1 before 2,835 at Campanelli Stadium on Tuesday evening. The Rox have lost six of their last seven games and eight of the last ten contests. RHP John Kelly allowed just one run in eight innings against the Spirit but the Rox mustered little offensive support. 3B Melvin Falu had three hits in the game, while SS Eugene Julien and 2B Alex Nunez each had two. Spirit C Alex Trezza had four hits for the visiting team in their victory. The Rox are 28-39 overall and now 8-13 in the second half, eight games back of the first-place Spirit.

Kelly and Spirit LHP Joey Siak matched each other pitch for pitch into the fifth inning of a scoreless tie. In the fifth, Falu led off with a single and moved to second on a one-out hit by Julien. With two outs, LF Jeremy Coronado dropped a single into left field, plating Falu, and giving the Rox a short-lived 1-0 lead. In the top of the sixth, former Rox LF Mike Torres scored on a two-out RBI single by SS Jerson Perez as the Spirit tied the game at one. Each pitcher pitched into the eighth. Kelly faced a potential go-ahead run at third base in the eighth inning but fanned the final batter of the inning to work out of the jam. Siak left the game in the eighth with the potential go-ahead run on base as well, but RHP Jamie Baker induced a flyout to the wall in left field to keep the game tied.

In the tenth, RHP Jon Koch, who pitched a scoreless ninth, gave up a leadoff double to 3B Gary Roche and a bunt single to Torres. With 1B Luis Lopez at the plate, Koch uncorked a wild pitch, allowing the Spirit to capture a 2-1 lead. A hit by Trezza later in the frame against RHP Matt Reilly made it 3-1 and North Shore plated two additional runs to take a 5-1 lead. RHP Derek Drage closed out the Rox in the bottom of the tenth.

The three games series moves to North Shore Wednesday where former Spirit LHP Bryan Morse (2-5, 5.02 ERA) takes the ball for the Rox against RHP Matt Bishop (7-3, 2.33 ERA) for the Spirit. Coverage begins at 6:45 PM with the Brockton Rox Pregame Show on www.brocktonrox.com and 1460 AM WXBR in Brockton with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM.
