New Haven County Cutters News Release
The New Haven County Cutters recently began their newest community outreach program. In an effort to aid a segment of the community that is often forgotten, Cutters players, staff, and even mascot Tripper, have begun a series of visits to area senior centers. This program is an effort to bring cheer and companionship to seniors who are no longer as mobile as they once were. "The City does a great job of providing activities for seniors, and what we hope to do is to provide companionship and let them know that we have not forgotten them," said David Boyle, Cutters' President. Thus far, the Cutters have scheduled visits to four New Haven senior centers and hope to arrange several more, including centers in West Haven.
Cutters players will be stopping by the senior centers to spend time with residents during lunch. Boyle added, "We hope other companies will follow our lead and encourage their employees to occasionally spend their lunch periods with folks who would appreciate the company." There are several senior centers located throughout New Haven and West Haven where seniors spend their days participating in various activities.
Darcey Cobbs, Director of Elderly Services for the City of New Haven shared, "We love the idea of having the players spend time with our seniors, many of whom are avid baseball fans. It makes the older adults in the community feel remembered and brings smiles to their faces. The City of New Haven truly appreciates this initiative on the part of the Cutters, and we anticipate a continued partnership with them. We hope that other community organizations will follow their lead."
The Cutters are already making plans to expand the program next season. According to Boyle, "We see this as the beginning of an ongoing relationship. Our players and staff understand how much joy they bring to young children and seniors alike. It is one of the factors that truly distinguishes us in the community."
Many seniors, including some who received visits from the Cutters, will be attending "Seniors Day" on Wednesday, August 8, 2007, when the Cutters take on the Grays in a Can-Am League game. The special 1:05 p.m. start time is scheduled to accommodate business people and senior citizens enjoy an afternoon of baseball in historic Yale Field.
