New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, NJ - The New Jersey Jackals and the Worcester Tornadoes had four of their seven meetings prior to Tuesday evening decided by one run, and tonight was no different. The Tornadoes took the first game of a three-game series against the Jackals, with a slim 3-2 win in 10 innings.

Following three innings of scoreless baseball, the Jackals touched up opposing pitcher Junior Guerrero. Sandy Madera doubled to lead off the inning, advanced to third on a groundout, and was pushed across when Joe Mihalics singled with two outs. But the lead would disappear in the blink of an eye.

In the top of the fifth, Yohanny Valera took Joel Bennett yard over the centerfield wall to even the score at one run a piece.

Two innings later, in the top of the seventh, Worcester used three consecutive singles, the final by Andrew Wishy, to take a slim 2-1 lead.

In the bottom half of the seventh, the Jackals forged back to tie the score. With a runner at third base and one out, Clyde Williams battled Guerrero in a ten pitch at-bat, and eventually plated the tying run with a sac fly to center.

The game would go into the tenth still tied at two, when with two outs, Dominic Ramos uncorked an RBI single into right field off of reliever Justin Garza, scoring Greg Smith from third. That would be the eventual game winning run.

John Birtwell earned the win in relief for Worcester, while Justin Garza suffered the loss for the Jackals. It was his third loss of the year against the Tornadoes.

Neither starting pitcher factored in the decision, despite both pitching extremely well. In seven innings, Joel Bennett surrendered two runs on eight hits while walking none and striking out four. Junior Guerrero lasted 6.2 innings, allowing two runs, just one earned, on five hits, five walks, while tying a season-high with eight strikeouts.
