Saginaw Spirit News Release
The Saginaw Spirit welcomed the Owen Sound Attack on Friday night to continue the Spirit's home stretch at the Dow Event Center. Friday's game marked the first time the Spirit and the Attack matched up in the 2014-15 season, which ended in a 4-3 victory over Owen Sound.
The Saginaw Spirit and Owen Sound Attack turned in a tense first period, with each team tallying a goal before heading to the locker room. The Spirit struck first after Artem Artemov displayed some impressive puck handling, skated through the Attack's defensemen and netted his 12th goal of the season at 11:31 of the first period. Tye Felhaber and Greg Di Tomaso were credited with the assists on the play. Saginaw aimed to keep the 1-0 lead over the Attack for the remainder of the period but were unable to keep Owen Sound from tying up the score. Saginaw's starting goaltender Evan Cormier saw some heavy traffic in front of the net, which gave Owen Sound's Zach Nastasiuk a scoring opportunity at 17:23 of the period. Nastasiuk tied the game at one, thanks to the assists from Petrus Palmu and Kyle Platzer. The Spirit and the Attack both produced 9 shots on the opposing goal, exhibiting a noticeably equally matched period.
The Attack were able to jump ahead of the Spirit in the second, finishing off the period with a 3-2 lead over Saginaw. Justin Brack was able to start the second period scoring for the Attack at 9:15 to take their first lead of the game against Saginaw. Ethan Szypula was credited with the lone assist on the play. Brack's goal did not stop Saginaw's leading goal scorer Dylan Sadowy as he quickly stole the puck between the circles and sniped his 32nd goal of the season at 11:19 of the period, to succeed in tying the game yet again. Owen Sound was brisk in retaliating and put a shot into the net off the stick of Zach Nastasiuk at the 12:37 mark, with assists coming from Justin Brack and Santino Centorame. The Spirit and the Attack saw no further scoring and began the second period intermission with Owen Sound leading shots on goal 13-10.
The Saginaw Spirit overwhelmed the Owen Sound Attack in the third period, turning on the offensive pressure, which eventually gave way to a 4-3 win for Saginaw. Connor Brown started the Spirit off in the third period after he knocked the puck past Owen Sound's goaltender Michael McNiven with his skate at 14:32 of the period. Brown scored his 18th goal of the season with the help of Dylan Sadowy and Chase Stewart. The Spirit capitalized on a two on one opportunity at 17:10 of the period as Mitchell Stephens fed a beautiful pass to Dylan Sadowy who scored the game winning goal and his 33rd tally of the season. The scoreboard read 4-3 as the buzzer sounded, sending the Spirit crowd to their feet in a fit of cheers. Final shots on goal read Saginaw 32, Owen Sound 28.
Saginaw will play host to Mississauga at the Dow Event Center, as the Spirit and Steelheads go head to head in their second matchup of the 2014-15 regular season. The Shocks & Saves Charity game will take place at 4:30 p.m. before Saginaw and Mississauga takes the ice at 7:11 p.m.
