Oshawa Generals News Release

It was an East-West matchup tonight as the Generals took on the Windsor Spitfires for the first and only time on home ice during the regular season. After outshooting the Spitfires 53-27, the Generals took home a 5-2 win in their 50th game of the season. Ken Appleby stood strong between the posts tonight, making his 40th start of the season.

The game was full of penalties tonight and the Generals took full advantage of all of their power play chances. The first goal of the game was scored by Logan Brown of the Spitfires at 10:44 assisted by Venuto. At 15:05, Graeme Brown was called for hooking and the Generals scored their first of the night. The goal was scored by Windsor native, Hunter Smith, assisted by Vande Sompel and Lindberg. The first period went by in a flash thanks to very few whistles. The Generals outshot the Spitfires 21-10 through the first.

The second period was much longer than the first, largely in part due to seven penalties throughout. At 6:01, Brent Pedersen took a beauty of a shot and put the second Generals goal of the night past Alex Fotinos. At 6:49, the Generals found themselves on a 5 on 3 power play with Doggett in the penalty box for roughing and Murphy sitting for slashing. With only five seconds remaining in the power play, Matt Mistele scored, assisted by Dakota Mermis and Aidan Wallace. A few more penalties were served into the end of the period, but the score remained 3-1 for the Generals. The Generals outshot the Spitfires 20-4 in the second after maintaining a strong presence in their end.

The Generals started the third period on a penalty kill with Kenny Huether sitting for boarding. Although the Generals began one man short, they continued to dominate the third period. At 8:17, Aidan Wallace scored, assisted by Joe Manchurek and Kenny Huether. Just over two minutes later, Matt Mistele scored an unassisted goal, earning his second point of the game. With less than five minutes remaining, the Spitfires continued to battle hard and put a second goal past Appleby. Vande Sompel was tripped in front of the net on a breakaway with only minutes remaining in the period. He was awarded a penalty shot but couldn't find the back of the net. Despite four penalties called against the Generals during the third, the Generals demonstrated why they are ranked first in the CHL Rankings and took home the 5-2 victory over the Spitfires. Tonight's win means that the Generals are the first team in the OHL to secure a playoff spot and it is sure to be an exciting playoff run indeed.

The Generals next home game is this Sunday, Feb. 8 when the reigning Memorial Cup champions, the Guelph Storm, head to the GM Centre. Please be reminded that puck drop is at 6:05 p.m. To purchase tickets, click here, visit the GM Centre Box Office, or call 1-877-436-8811.
