Oshawa Generals News Release

BARRIE, ON - The Oshawa Generals mounted a late comeback Saturday night to beat the Barrie Colts 4-2 at the Sadlon Centre.

Both teams were coming off a loss heading into the game, and the Colts were looking to snap a three-game losing streak.

The Generals gave Matthew Humphries his first start of the season after missing the first two games at Dallas Stars training camp, and with Jaden Cholette playing so well, he got the start on Friday.

At the other end of the ice, the Colts gave the nod to Hagen Bach, who had already had two starts under his belt this season.

First Period

The Generals had a little bit of a sloppy start. Although they had plenty of the puck, it felt like the puck was bouncing off everyone's stick, which limited the amount of chances Oshawa created.

That sloppy play would bleed into the power play, which would really struggle today and keep the Colts in the game.

The Colts would take advantage of being able to hang around late in the period when they finally got a little bit of time in the offensive zone. Former General Anthony Figliomeni took the puck in the corner and threw the puck into the front of the net. His pass would slide through the slot, up to the point where Evan Passmore would take the puck and step into open ice just above the faceoff dot before rifling it off the post and in to give Barrie a 1-0 lead.

Second Period

Unfortunately for the Gens, aside from a couple of looks on the power play, they couldn't create many dangerous chances, and that would lead them into the second period down a goal.

In the second period, it felt like more of the same, but the Generals finally capitalized on the power play. Barrie Colt Nicholas Desiderio took a five-minute major for a check to the head, and late in the power play the Gens would tie it.

After the Generals worked the puck to the front of the net nicely, Onni Kalto did a great job banging it home for his second goal of the season. Kalto's last goal also came on the power play against Brampton in the season opener.

The Colts would answer shortly after. Lucas Matheson took the puck at the point and fired a shot wide of the goal; however, the puck bounced off the end boards and out to the back post, where Michael Tang would bank the puck off Humphries, who was retreating to his post and in.

Heading into the third period, it felt like a frustrating game for the Gens as they probably shouldn't have been losing while outshooting the Colts 23-13 and also having far more time on the power play.

The Colts also didn't generate much offence but seemed to capitalize on the chances they did get.

Third Period

Barrie did a good job defending the lead early in the period, but it seemed to flip when Tyler Hinde found himself alone on a breakaway from the blue line, created from a turnover in the Colts' zone.

Although he didn't score, he would draw a penalty directly after, and it felt like the Gens started to generate some opportunities. It would take a little bit to tie the game, but once they did, the floodgates opened.

The tying goal was a well-worked puck into the middle of the ice to Brooks Rogowski, who fired the puck towards the goal that would go off Harrison Franssen and into the back of the net. That is Franssen's first goal as captain of the Gennies.

Just over 30 seconds later, a puck would find its way out to Leo Laschon at the point, who rifled it through a crowd of bodies and into the back of the net. That would give Oshawa a 3-2 lead with 59 seconds to go in the third period.

Linus Funck would wrap the game up, scoring off a bank shot on the empty net from the defensive zone, and the Gennies would take it from there 4-2.

The power play still struggled, going 1 for 7 and caused head coach Mario Pouliot to switch up some of the personnel on the top unit.

Although it wasn't pretty, the 22-shot third-period performance we saw tonight mirrored the resilience we saw against Brampton in the season opener. If this can be a calling card for this team going forward, that would be huge.

The Gennies head back home on Sunday against the Brantford Bulldogs after splitting the two games on the road.
