KINGSTON, ON - The Belleville Bulls renewed their rilvary with the Kingston Frontenacs at the Rogers K-Rock Centre on Friday night. The two East Division clubs were tied with 46 points in the Eastern Conference standings coming into the contest. After allowing three goals within the first 14 minutes of action, the Bulls battled back scoring 4 un-answered goals to down the Frontenacs 4-3.
The Frontenac's wasted no time pressuring their visiting rivals as they opened up the scoring on their first shot of the game. Just over the four-minute mark, Lawson Crouse stepped into a strong slap shot that beat Charlie Graham glove side. Finland product Juho Lammikko picked up the assist on the first tally of the game.
Kingston kept their early momentum rolling just two minutes later. While killing a Jared Steege cross checking penalty, over ager Sameul Schutt squeezed a backhand in from a horrible angle. Zack Dorval was credited with the short-handed assist. Then just over seven minutes later, Evan McEneny netted his 5th of the season when he banged home a rebound out front on the power play. Conor McGlynn and Crouse added the helpers on the goal that would end the night for Graham.
34 seconds later, Bulls forward Jake Bricknell intercepted a dumping attempt by Kingston netminder Lucas Peressini and quickly buried his first of the season. Kingston led 10-3 in shots after the first 20 minutes of action.
The middle frame started with a flurry of Kingston chances on goaltender Connor Hicks but the rookie stood his ground and made a number of good saves. Belleville enjoyed a 5 on 3 power play six and a half minutes in thanks to a Dorval roughing penalty and a Chad Duchesne high sticking minor. At 8:06 Vancouver Canucks prospect Jordan Subban tied the franchise record for goals in a season by a defenceman when he ripped his 19th of the year past Peressini. Forwards David Tomasek and Niki Petti picked up assists on the goal that cut the lead to one.
Belleville had three more power play opportunities before the end of the stanza but could not find the equalizer on a number of good scoring chances. Kingston led 18-9 in shots after two periods of play.
Bulls Captain Brett Welychka returned to the line up for the first time since suffering a knee injury on January 18th and made his presence felt in a big way just 46 seconds into the third period. Welychka took a cross ice pass from Subban while breaking into Frontenacs zone and made a beautiful move to beat Peressini for his 9th of the campaign. Linemate Stephen Harper picked up the other assist on the game tying goal.
Later in the frame newly acquired forward Trent Fox jumped on a loose puck off a faceoff in the Kingston zone and wired a wrister that beat Peressini to put his club up 4-3. Andrew Ming was credited with the lone assist on the go ahead goal.
Kingston would pull Peressini in the dying seconds of regualtion but the Fronts couldn't solve Hicks as the Bulls escape 4-3 come from behind victory on the road. Hicks, who made 23 saves in 46 minutes of action, was awarded the second star of the contest. Final shots were 30-15 for Kingston.
With the win the Bulls jump two points ahead of the Frontenacs and improve to 21-23-3-3.
