OSHAWA, ON - The Oshawa Generals fell 5-3 to the Brantford Bulldogs Sunday night at the Tribute Communities Centre.
The Generals started Matthew Humphries for the second night in a row, while the Bulldogs gave the nod to Vilmer Salen Forsberg.
Each team came in after a win on Saturday night, with the Generals pulling off a late comeback against the Barrie Colts. As for the Bulldogs, they pummeled the Kingston Frontenacs 10-4 on Saturday night.
This was also an early-season battle for first in the East Division, with Brantford and Oshawa sitting in first and second place.
First Period
It was a low-event first period, which we haven't really seen in this early part of the season for the Oshawa Generals.
The pace of the game was good for two teams that were playing their third game in three nights, and the Gens did a good job breaking the puck out of the defensive zone, which has been a struggle for them at times this season.
The lone goal came on the power play for Brantford after they worked the puck around the Oshawa zone well from the start of the power play until they scored. Aiden Kelly took the puck on the left-side boards before feeding Jet Kwajah at the point, who found Jason Musa on the right-side faceoff dot. Musa took the one-timer and fired it over Humphries' shoulder to give Brantford the 1-0 lead.
Each team would trade a couple of more chances before the period came to a close, but nobody could cash in.
Something to note for Gens fans is that Onni Kalto left the game and didn't return after taking a check from behind into the boards at the end of the period.
Second Period
The second period was the opposite of the first, with goals being scored in bunches. Unfortunately for the Generals, Brantford would score four of the six goals in the second period.
The Generals got the scoring kicked off just a minute into the Second with Aiden O'Donnell taking advantage of a fortuitous bounce. Brady Murnane stepped into a slapshot which went off a leg and landed directly on O'Donnell's tape. He fired it into the empty net for his second goal of the year to tie the game up 1-1.
Brantford would score the next four goals. Jack Torr scored off a pass in front from a chance that was created off the rush for his second of the season.
After Torr put Brampton ahead, the Bulldogs would take on three more in just three minutes. George Komadoski scored his first of the season, firing one past Humphries on the short side before Kaden McGregor scored twice to put Brantford up 5-1.
After the fifth goal, the Generals would switch their goaltenders, putting Jaden Cholette into the game in relief of Humphries.
Mark Pape got his second of the year shortly after Cholette came into the game to cut the lead down to 5-2, and we'd head into the third period with the Generals looking for their second third-period comeback in as many nights.
Third Period
Just six minutes into the third period, Ryan Hedley tucked home his first career OHL goal. Hedley did a good job battling in front of the net while a shot from the point came in that created the rebound chance he capitalized on.
From there, the Bulldogs did a good job keeping the Generals from creating many dangerous opportunities until the Generals pulled Cholette for the extra attacker.
Salen Forsberg made a couple of big stops in the final minutes while trying to hold onto the 5-3 lead, which resulted in a big two points for the Bulldogs.
The Generals played pretty solid in the first and third periods, but the lacklustre performance in the second period cost them the game.
The penalty kill, which has been pretty good to start the season, gave up two goals on three kills. It felt like the Bulldogs were connecting on seam passes easily, which opened up the Generals' penalty killers and created good chances for Brantford.
Oshawa will get some time off after wrapping up a three game in three nights stretch. Their next game will be at home on Friday against the Ottawa 67's with puck drop at 7:05 PM. If you'd like to come cheer the Gennies on, you can get your tickets.
