Saginaw Spirit News Release
On Friday night, the Saginaw Spirit traveled to Sault St Marie to take on the Greyhounds at the Essar Centre. Despite outshooting the Greyounds by a 42 to 25 margin, the Saginaw Spirit would fall to the Soo Greyhounds by the score of 5-4. Scoring for the Spirit were Eric Locke, Vince Trocheck, and Brandon Saad.
Saginaw got the scoring started quickly with Eric Locke netting his ninth goal of the season just 1:16 into the contest. However, Greyhounds forward Nick Cousins would answer back just 12 seconds following the Spirit goal to tie the game at 1. Six minutes later, fresh out of the penalty box, Vince Trocheck caught a loose puck sending him in on a breakaway and he would beat Jack Campbell to put the Spirit back in the lead 2-1.
Three minutes into the second period, David Elsner would throw a shot on goal from the point that would beat Jake Paterson, once again tying the game. Greyhounds captain Carson Dubchak would then find the back of the Spirit net nine minutes later to put the Greyhounds in the lead for the first time in the contest. The Spirit would answer back with twelve seconds remaining in the second period, off the stick of Brandon Saad, assists to Josh Shalla and Michael Fine.
Entering the third period, the score was tied at three goals apiece until Michael Schumacher would net his 21st goal of the season to put the Greyhounds up once again. A few minutes later, the Greyhounds would add to their lead with a goal from Brett Findlay. Saginaw wouldn't go away quietly however. Brandon Saad would score his second goal of the night with eight minutes remaining in the third period to make the score 5-4. That is as close as the Spirit would come on Friday night. Saginaw would pull goaltender Jake Paterson but could not score the equalizer as the Greyhounds would skate to a 5-4 victory over the Spirit.
