Spirit Earn Point in Late Two-Goal Rally

Saginaw, MI. - The Saginaw Spirit got two late third period goals, but fell in a shootout to the Barrie Colts, 4-3 in front of 3,455 fans on Friday evening at The Dow Event Center.
After a stretch of just over seven minutes without a shot, Vancouver Canucks draft pick Arturs Silovs denied chances by defensemen Ilya Solovyov and Saginaw, Michigan native Mitchell Smith to keep the game scoreless in the first period.
The Colts got on the board first from a goal by Ryan Suzuki only 9:24 into the first period. Barrie leading scorer Tyson Foerster centered the puck from the right half-wall into the crease that the Carolina Hurricanes first-round pick deflected past Spirit goaltender Marshall Frappier.
Suzuki extended his point streak to nine games with the goal.
After a Spirit penalty in the offensive zone, Jacob Tortora took a shot from the point, which took a redirection into the net, advancing the Colts lead to 2-0. The Colts outshot the Spirit in the first period, 7-9.
Only 3:02 into the second period, D.J. Busdeker collected the puck off the boards and took a slapshot from the right-wing circle. The Colts goaltender Arturs Silovs made the chest save, but coughed up a juicy rebound to Saginaw's Ethan Cardwell, who buried the puck into the back of the net for the first goal of the game for the Spirit and closed the gap to 2-1. The goal gave the Courtice, Ontario native five on the season.
With only three seconds remaining in the second period, St. Louis Blues draft pick Tyler Tucker put the Colts back into the lead by two goals. Tucker received a pass from Tyson Foerster and walked into a slap shot from the slot. The Colts outshot the Spirit once again, 23-20.
The first half of the third period was uneventful with no penalties or goals for both teams and only two shots on net for the Spirit.
At 14:52 of the third, Danny Katic brought the puck around the back of the net and passed it to New York Islanders prospect Blade Jenkins at the top of the left-wing circle. Jenkins shot the puck right between Silovs pads to bring the Spirit within one goal of the Colts.
With Saginaw already on a powerplay trying to tie the game, a four-minute double minor was called on Colts Matthew Hill for high sticking making it a Spirit five-on-three advantage.
Still on the power play, Ilya Solovyov passed the puck to 2020 top NHL prospect Cole Perfetti at the top of the left-wing circle. Perfetti with a slapshot to the net, tipped in by Minnesota Wild draft pick Damien Giroux to tie the game 3-3 with only two minutes remaining in regulation.
Both teams were unable to score in the remaining minutes, which took the game to overtime.
Overtime came and went with both teams fighting hard, but were still unable to break the tie. The game ended in the first shootout of the season for the Spirit.
Barrie prevailed 2-0 in the shootout after Tyson Foerster and Dallas Stars Prospect Nicholas Porco converted on their two shootout attempts for the 4-3 victory.
