Brampton Steelheads News Release
Mississauga, ON - The Mississauga Steelheads faced off against the Hamilton Bulldogs on Friday night at the Paramount Fine Foods Centre.
The Hamilton Bulldogs opened the scoring late in the first period with the Steelheads in the penalty box, as Arthur Kaliyev took a shot from the hashmarks that found its way past Kai Edmonds. Mississauga outshot Hamilton 11-7 in the period, but headed to the dressing room looking for the equalizer.
The Steelheads had a prime scoring chance to start the second period with Keean Washkurak crashing the net hard, but the goal was waved off. Not too long after, it was Cole Schwindt who one-timed a shot in the slot but was denied by the blocker of Mario Costantini. The Fish were rewarded for putting on the pressure as Max Dodig tucked away a rebound to tie the game at one. Hamilton would regain the lead as Tag Bertuzzi scored on the powerplay to make it 2-1. Washkurak received a penalty shot with a chance to tie the game, but couldn't beat Costantini. The Steelheads headed into the third period trailing the Bulldogs by a goal.
The Bulldogs increased their lead at the start of the third period, with a bouncing puck finding Avery Hayes in front of the net who wristed a shot past Edmonds. With just under ten minutes to go, Nick Isaacson deflected a point shot from Nicholas Canade to cut Hamilton's lead to one. The Steelheads would battle hard to tie the game, but Hamilton would add an empty netter to make the score final of 4-2.
Adam Varga and William Portokalis recorded their first points of the season receiving assists on the Steelheads lone goal, while Thomas Harley recorded a career single-game high in shots on goal with nine.
Steelheads Head Coach and General Manager James Richmond had the following to say after the game, "I thought we had some good chances. We played two real good periods, we were pushing in the third period but took an undisciplined penalty that took some momentum away from us. At the end of the day, it was a special teams game, our penalty kill wasn't good enough and our powerplay wasn't good enough."
