Spirit complete series sweep with 2-1 win

August 24, 2006 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
North Shore Spirit News Release

Joey Siak (6-7) came through with a spectacular starting performance on Thursday night, powering the surging Spirit to a 2-1 win over the Jackals for the series sweep and the fifth straight North Shore victory.

Once again it was the Spirit offense getting on the scoreboard first as North Shore took advantage of some two-out hitting to push two second-inning runs across the plate. Alex Trezza got things started with a double and came around to score on an RBI base hit from Jon de Vries. De Vries went from first to third on a single from Andrew Wishy and came around to score the game-winning run on a double off the bat of Ryan Bethel.

New Jersey cut the Spirit lead in half with a run in the top of the sixth, but they squandered an opportunity to take the lead. Two singles and an error loaded the bases for the Jackals with no outs in the inning. Ricardo Cordova started a nifty 4-6-3 double play on a ground ball from the next batter, however, allowing just one runner to cross the plate. Siak got a high fly ball to left field for the innings' final out to escape the jam with the Spirit lead in tact.

Kevin Fitzgerald pitched a scoreless ninth inning, tying a CanAm record with his 21st save of the season. Fitzgerald picked up a save in all three games of the Jackals series. Raul Valdez pitched well for New Jersey allowing just two runs on six hits, but he suffered his third loss of the season.

The Spirit will kick off a four-game series with Worcester tomorrow night at the new Fraser Field. Shaun McNamara gets the start for the Spirit while the Tornadoes send Reid Willett to the mound in the Commonwealth Cup matchup for Bay State bragging rights.
