(Nashua, NH, Aug. 24, 2006) Ryan Lehr's one-out single in the ninth inning scored Goefrey Tomlinson with the go-ahead run as the Quebec Capitales (22-14, 38-41) defeated the Nashua Pride (20-15, 37-40), 2-1, Thursday night in front of 1,075 at Historic Holman Stadium.
Tomlinson opened the inning with a single to left off Pride reliever Jamie Baker (3-1).
He advanced to second on a stolen base and when the throw to second went into centerfield, Tomlinson moved on to third base. Pride closer Derrick DePriest replaced Baker with no one out and Tomlinson on third. DePriest struck out the first batter he faced, Eddie Lantigua, but Lehr hit a ground ball up the middle and through to center for a hit to put the Capitales ahead to stay.
After five scoreless innings, Quebec took the lead in the sixth on a one-out run-scoring single by Dany Scalabrini. The Pride tied it in their sixth on a two-out infield hit by Billy Becher that scored Mark Hamilton.
Both starters pitched well. Jorge Perez, in his first appearance for Quebec, worked seven-plus innings, scattering eight hits, allowing one earned run, walking two and striking out eight. Nashua's Dan Reichert pitched seven innings, surrendering four hits and one earned run, walking a pair and fanning five.
Quebec reliever Brandon Pello (1-1) pitched one inning and was credited with the win. Pello came into the ballgame in the eighth inning with Nashua runners at first and second and no one out and got his team out of a jam. For the second straight game, Quebec closer Cristian Mendoza struck out of the side in the ninth inning and earned his 15th save.
The Pride open a four-game series Friday night at Historic Holman Stadium against the New Haven County Cutters. First pitch is set for 7:05 on Hockey Night with special appearances by former Boston Bruins greats Brad Park and Rick Middleton and Keith Aucoin, a native of Chelmsford, Massachusetts and a member of the 2006 Stanley Cup Champion Carolina Hurricanes and the Lowell Lock Monsters. The first 1,000 fans tomorrow night receive a complimentary mini hockey stick.
With Nashua's loss on Thursday night, the Pride are currently in a virtual four-way tie with New Jersey, Quebec and Worcester for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Can-Am League. Nashua has 11 games remaining in the regular season.
