Saginaw Spirit News Release
SAGINAW, MI. - On Friday night, the Saginaw Spirit welcomed the Kingston Frontenacs to The Dow Event Center in the final contest of a two-game season series. The Fronts went on to sweep the season series against the Spirit, as Kingston battled back to take down the Spirit by a final score of 5-3.
A riveting first period between the Saginaw Spirit and the Kingston Frontenacs kept the Saginaw crowd on the edge of their seats. The Spirit sniped three consecutive goals to start the contest off on a high note. At 2:46 of the first period Kris Bennett slipped the puck through Jeremy Helvig's pads to put the Spirit on the board. Tye Felhaber kept the ball rolling for Saginaw as he cushioned a 2-0 lead at the 3:26 mark. Tampa Bay Lightning prospect Mitchell Stephens notched his 100th career OHL point assisting the play. Just before the midway mark of the first period, Artem Artemov joined the Spirit scoring party to take a 3-0 lead at 9:41 of the period. Shortly after, Lucas Peressini was summoned to the ice as he relieved Jeremy Helvig of his goaltending duties for the night. Moments before the first period came to a close, Florida Panthers prospect Lawson Crouse scored to put a slight dent in the Spirit's 3-1 lead. Saginaw outshot Kingston 12-10 in the first period.
In the second period, the Kingston Frontenacs closed the gap on the Spirit's two-goal lead. Ryan Cranford pushed the Fronts within one-goal of the Spirit at 6:09 of the second period, with help from Liam Murray and Conor McGlynn. Kingston's Jared Steege followed suit of Cranford and put the puck past Evan Cormier to tie the game at three goals apiece. Kingston controlled play in the second period, outshooting the Spirit 13-5.
A majority of the third period showcased hard fought effort by the Spirit and the Frontencas to break the 3-3 tie. Evan Cormier and Lucas Peressini stood tall to keep each opponents offense at bay and either team from taking a one-goal lead. The score finally broke at 12:47 of the third period, Kingston took their first lead of the night as Lawson Crouse picked off the puck deep in the Spirit zone and ripped the puck past Cormier to take a 4-3 advantage for the Fronts. Kingston's Jared Steege went on to slip in one more, late insurance goal on an empty Spirit net en route to a 5-3 win for the Frontenacs. Evan Cormier continued to impress in the Spirit net, as he blocked 41 shots in Friday night's contest. Kingston outshot the Spirit by a final count of 46-23.
