OHL Owen Sound Attack

Durzi Scores Twice as Attack Down Wolves

March 4, 2016 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Owen Sound Attack News Release

The Owen Sound Attack made it six straight seasons with 30 or more wins when they defeated the Sudbury Wolves on Friday, Mar. 4.

After trailing 2-0 to the Wolves early in the 2nd period, the Attack would score three unanswered in the middle frame before adding two straight markers in the 3rd to skate away to a 5-3 victory in the 2nd game of a three game road swing.

Sean Durzi would lead the way for the Attack in the win, scoring twice while netminder Daniel Dekoning would reach double digit victories on the year by picking up his 10th 'W' of the season in goal.

Owen Sound would start the game with the same tenacity that they showed on Thursday night in North Bay, but without the results on the scoreboard.

In fact, it would be the home team who would find the back of the net first after withstanding the early Attack pressure.

After taking a commanding 13-6 lead on the Mark McDade Remax Shots on Goal, Owen Sound would see the Wolves climb back into it and eventually take the lead on a slaspshot by Cole Mayo.

Mayo's shot would put Sudbury up 1-0 with 3:11 left in the first period, and send the teams to the dressing room with the Attack trailing by one on the scoreboard and 14-13 on the shots on goal.

And when the middle stanza began, Sudbury's lead would quickly double.

Another shot from the point, this one by Brandon Bastasin just 2:11 into the period, would make it a 2-0 lead for the team.

The Attack wouldn't lay dormant for long though.

After going down by a pair, the Bears appeared to come out of hibernation and began pressing, and their increased pace of play would result in Sean Durzi's 7th goal of the year.

Durzi's goal would come off of a rush up the right hand boards and was the result of a perfectly placed snapshot just over the outstretched blocker of Sudbury's Troy Timpano with 9:09 gone in the 2nd.

Owen Sound would then draw even just under three minutes later, this time on another snapshot courtesy of Liam Dunda who found the back of the net for his 6th of the year.

The Bears weren't done there either.

With just over two minutes remaining in the 2nd, the Attack would score their third straight goal to come all the way back and take their first lead of the game.

Kevin Hancock would get credit for the go-ahead goal by redirecting home a Markus Phillips point shot with the Attack on Baywest Nissan Powerplay.

Owen Sound's 3-2 lead would hold until 8:25 had been played in the 3rd period, when a defensive miscue allowed Sudbury's Dmitry Sokolov to break in all alone and sneak the puck behind Daniel Dekoning to tie the game at three apiece.

The teams would battle with the score tied at three until just under six minutes left in the game, when a huge save by Daniel Dekoning would spark an Owen Sound rush.

That burst up the ice would turn into an odd man rush for the Attack, and Josh Sterk would capitalize making no mistake on his 9th goal of the year to make it a 4-3 Attack lead with 5:28 left in regulation.

It wouldn't take long for Owen Sound to widen their lead either.

Just two minutes later, Durzi would pocket his 2nd of the night on a net front scramble to put the visitors ahead 5-3, a lead that would prove insurmountable for Sudbury, as the Attack would weather a late push with the Wolves' cage empty and skate away with the win.

Sean Durzi's two goal performance would earn him Mac Taylor Corporation 1st Star of the Game while Josh Sterk would earn 2nd star honours courtesy of the game winning goal. Sudbury's Troy Timpano would be named the game's 3rd star by way of his 33 save effort in the losing cause.

The Mark McDade Remax Shots on Goal would finish at 38-30 in favour of the Attack on the evening, with Daniel Dekoning making 27 stops in the win.

The Attack will wrap up their road trip with a stop in Barrie on Saturday, Mar. 5 before hosting those very same Colts on Wednesday, Mar. 9 at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre.
