State College Spikes News Release

STATE COLLEGE, PA - Josh Swirchak collected three hits to key the offense, but it was a passed ball in the ninth that brought in Anthony Ray with the winning run in the State College Spikes' 7-6 win over the Hudson Valley Renegades on Sunday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Ray's spring to the plate completed the Spikes' (2-1) second comeback win in as many nights to start the 2016 home schedule.

Swirchak scored a run, drove in two runs and produced a double. The second-year Spike was also a focal point in the ninth, working a walk to load the bases before the game-ending passed ball.

Tommy Edman contributed another big night as well, putting up his second consecutive multi-hit game to begin his professional career. The 2016 sixth-round draft choice of the Cardinals out of Stanford, Edman tripled in a run in the opening frame and beat out an infield single as part of a 2-for-4 evening.

State College had to come back twice during the game, starting in the first. Trailing 2-0, Swirchak's single to right scored Danny Martin all the way from first, and was followed by Edman's triple to tie the game. Bladimil Franco then drove in the go-ahead run with a groundout to third.

However, Hudson Valley (1-2) posted a pair of runs in the third and two more in the fourth to retake the lead. Angel Perez was the focal point of the Renegades offense early, tripling in each of his first two at-bats and scoring runs. Perez also doubled in the seventh for his third extra-base hit of the game.

The game also marked the return of former Penn State infielder Jim Haley to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park less than a month after his final game in a Nittany Lion uniform. Haley, who was taken by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 19th round of the 2016 MLB Draft, produced his first professional hit with an RBI triple in the third.

The Spikes' rallied for a pair of runs on an error and an Elier Rodriguez RBI single in the fourth, then tied the game in the seventh on Swirchak's double to right to set up the late heroics.

Yeison Medina (1-0) picked up the win in relief for the Spikes by finishing the game with two innings of work. Median allowed one hit and one walk while recording one strikeout.

State College starter Steven Farinaro shook off a tough beginning to retired 11 of the last 12 batters he faced. Farinaro allowed six runs, five earned, on nine hits while striking out four over seven innings on the hill. The righty threw 85 pitches on the night, 62 for strikes.

Hudson Valley reliever Eduar Lopez (0-1) took the loss after throwing the mishandled pitch to end the game. Lopez faced four batters, retiring one, and yielded two walks and a hit before the final passed ball.
