Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BURLINGTON, VT - Joey Havrilak's three-run homer in the top of the 13th inning snapped a scoreless tie and led the Connecticut Tigers to a 3-1 New York-Penn League extra-innings victory in the Vermont Lake Monsters home opener at historic Centennial Field on Sunday evening.
After a fielding error to open the 13th inning and a Josh Lester double put runners on second and third with no outs, Havrilak connected on an 0-1 pitch from Lake Monsters reliever Jorge Martinez and sent it over the rightfield fence for his second home run in three games this season. Vermont finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the 13th on a Miguel Mercedes two-out RBI triple, but then Michael Vinson came on to get Miguel Guzman to groundout to end the game with the tying run on first base.
Both starting pitchers shined over the first part of the game as Vermont starter Brendan Butler scattered six hits with no walks and three strikeouts over seven innings, while Tigers starter Locke St. John allowed three hits with one walk and seven strikeouts over the first six innings. Vermont's best chance to score in regulation came in the eighth inning when Brett Sunde led off with a triple, but reliever Adenson Verastegui struckout the next three Lake Monsters to keep the game scoreless.
Vermont reliever Tyler Painton took over for Butler in the eighth inning and tossed 2 2/3 scoreless innings as Lake Monster pitchers have combined for a 1.24 team ERA over the first three games, allowing just four earned runs over the first 31 innings of the season.
Havrilak went 4-for-6 with three singles to go along with his three-run homer, while Lester was 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles for Connecticut (2-1). Six Connecticut pitchers combined to allow just six hits with five walks and 17 strikeouts over their 13 innings of work.
Vermont (0-3) will look for its first win of the season when they host Connecticut again at Centennial Field beginning at 7:05 pm. The first 2,000 fans will receive a voucher for a free Gondola Sky Ride courtesy of Stowe Mountain Resort.
