Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PA - A bases-loaded wild pitch proved to be the difference as the Hudson Valley Renegades squandered a three-run lead in a 7-6 loss to the State College Spikes at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park Sunday evening. The loss wasted a three-hit performance by rightfielder Angel Perez, which included two triples.
The scoring started early as the teams combined for five runs in the first inning. Perez led the game off for Hudson Valley with a triple to center, then scored on a single by centerfielder Garrett Whitley to make the score 1-0. Following two groundouts which moved Whitley to third, shortstop Jonathan Popadics singled him home to give the visitors a two-run lead.
The Spikes responded with three runs in the bottom-half. A walk and a single put runners at first and second for State College to start the inning before shortstop Tommy Edman tripled to left to bring in both runners and tie the game at two. The next hitter, designated hitter Bladmil Franco, then grounded to third to give the Spikes a 3-2 lead.
The Renegades would retake the lead with a two-run third. For the second time in as many at-bats, Perez led off the inning with a triple. Following a strikeout third baseman, Jim Haley in his return to State College, would pick up a triple of his own to plate Perez and tie the game at three apiece. It was the first RBI of the season for the former Nittany Lion. Recently signed designated hitter Nathaniel Lowe would then get in on the act with an RBI single to center to give Hudson Valley at 4-3 lead.
Hudson Valley added to that lead with two more runs in the fourth. Catcher Danny De La Calle led off the inning with a double before moving to third on a groundout. He then scored on a double from leftfielder Miguel Hernandez. Perez followed that with a flyout to right, however with the runner tagging the throw by rightfielder Ricardo Bautista got by the third baseman and allowed Hernandez to score and give the Renegades a 6-3 advantage.
But the Spikes would not go quietly as they responded with two unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth. After the first two hitters were retired, catcher Chris Rivera tripled to center. Vincent Jackson, the Spikes' leftfielder, hit a grounder that was bobbled by Haley, which allowed Rivera to score and keep the inning alive. After Jackson stole second, first baseman Elier Rodriguez singled him home to bring State College to within one.
Things stayed that way until the seventh when, with one out, a walk and stolen base by Martin led to an RBI double by third baseman Josh Swirchak to knot the game up for the third time.
The game remained tied until the ninth. A ledoff walk by Renegade reliever Elias Torres was erased on a bunt fielder's choice. However, a single by Martin and a walk to Swirchak loaded the bases. Torres then uncorked a wild pitch with Edman batting, which allowed centerfielder Anthony Ray to score from third and give State College the win.
Despite the loss, Perez continued his hot hitting for the Renegades by going 3-5 with two triples, a double and two runs scored totaling eight bases. He is 8-13 on the season (.538) and has three triples.
Torres (0-1) took the loss for the Renegades after allowing that earned run in 0.1 of an inning. Hudson Valley's pitching struggled as starter Brock Burke allowed five runs, three earned, on six hits in 4.2 innings work. The southpaw struck out seven batters as well. Reliever Deivy Mendez allowed a run on one hit in 3.1 innings of work in his first appearance of the season. He also struck out four.
Yelson Medina (1-0) got the win for State College after pitching two scoreless innings of relief. Starter Steven Farinaro settled down after a rough start allowing six runs, five earned, on nine hits in seven innings of work. After Hernandez's double in the sixth, State College pitchers retired 17 of the last 20 men they faced.
Swirchak led the way offensively for the Spikes by going 3-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored. Edman chipped in by going 2-4 with a triple, RBI and run scored as well.
A whopping five triples were hit in the game along with nine extra-base hits between the teams. Hudson Valley had six of those base hits and three of the triples.
The Renegades and Spikes go at it in game two of their series with a 7:05 start tomorrow. Right-hander Jose Alonzo with go for the Renegads against State College righty Ronnie Williams. Hudson Valley returns home on Wednesday to take on Lowell in the first of a three game series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05. For tickets, call 845-838-0094 or go to hvrenegades.com.
