BURLINGTON, VT - In a back and forth affair, the Connecticut Tigers (2-1) outlasted the Vermont Lake Monsters (0-3), affiliate of the Oakland Athletics, 3-1 in 13 innings.
With runners at second and third, and nobody out in the 13th inning, Joey Havrilak (4-6, HR, 3 RBI) hit a three-run dinger, his second in as many days, to break up the scoreless tie.
Both teams got superb starts from their starting pitchers. Locke St. John gave Connecticut six scoreless innings, scattering three hits and striking out seven. His counterpart, Brendan Butler, tossed seven scoreless frames and yielded six hits to the Tigers.
Each team threatened late in the ballgame. In the bottom of the eighth, the Lake Monsters lead-off the inning with a Brett Sunde triple to centerfield. Adenson Verastegui buckled down, striking out the next three batters to get out of the inning unscathed.
The Tigers had a golden opportunity in the ninth, after Joey Havrilak singled. Havrilak stole second and advanced to third on an error by the first baseman Miguel Guzman. With no-one out, Tyler Painton was able to escape the jam without any damage.
In the 10th the Tigers threatened again, Joey Havrilak, with runners at first and second, singled to right field. Junnell Ledezma (2-3) tried to score from second but was thrown out by Lake Monsters right fielder Luis Barrera.
Victor Mueses (1-0) grabbed the win, after pitching 1.2 innings and striking out four. Michael Vinson (1) came on in the ninth and preserved the victory. With runners at the corners and two down, Vinson induced a groundball back to the mound to end it.
The Tigers will look to win their first series of the year, tomorrow night at Centennial Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m
