State College Spikes News Release

-SPIKES CONTINUE NYC TRIP IN STATEN ISLAND TONIGHT: The State College Spikes maintain sole possession of first place in the New York-Penn League Wild Card race and look to cut into Jamestown's two-game lead in the Pinckney Division tonight in the midst of a six-game road trip through New York City as they face the Staten Island Yankees at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. The Spikes have won eight straight games and nine of their last ten, and currently have the best team ERA of any club across Minor League Baseball at 2.42 after a perfect 6-0 homestand. State College is 9-13 all-time against Staten Island, 3-7 on the road.

-LAST GAME: The Spikes plated all of their runs via homer on Wednesday night, with Luke Voit, Carson Kelly, Steven Ramos and David Washington all going deep to tie a club record and defeat the Staten Island Yankees, 7-3, at Richmond County Bank Ballpark and give the Spikes their eighth consecutive victory. The four home runs matched the Spikes' single-game record, set on August 7, 2007 against Lowell and matched on August 24, 2008 at Mahoning Valley. Voit opened the scoring with a solo shot to left field in the third inning. Kelly then gave the lead back to State College with a three-run clout to center field to make it a 4-3 game. In the eighth inning, Ramos led off with his first long ball of the season as he swatted a solo homer. Washington capped it all off with a two-run homer off of the scoreboard, his seventh of the season.

-PIERCE TO PITCH FOR SPIKES THIS EVENING: Right-hander Andrew Pierce heads to the hill for his eighth pro appearance and fifth start as he gets the ball for State College tonight against the Yankees. Pierce earned his first professional save last time out after giving up one run on three hits and striking out six over four innings. The Southern Miss product was the eighth-round draft choice of the Cardinals this year, and holds a 3.86 ERA as a starter with 13 strikeouts in 16 1/3 innings.

-YANKEES GO WITH GALLEGOS TONIGHT: In a change to the rotation, right-hander Giovanny Gallegos gets moved up a day to make the start for Staten Island in tonight's game. Gallegos, a native of Obregon, Mexico, is making his 11th start of the season for the Yankees. The righty allowed four runs in three innings at Williamsport last time out, giving up five hits while striking out two. Two of the hits he allowed were homers. Right-hander David Palladino is now scheduled to get the ball for Staten Island in the series finale tomorrow.
