Lowell Spinners News Release

NILES, OH - The Lowell Spinners wasted little time getting on the board, plating two runs in the first inning thanks to two Mahoning Valley errors and one wild pitch, en route to defeating the Scrappers, 7-0, Wednesday night at Eastwood Field.

The shutout victory was the eighth of the season for Lowell, setting a new club record. The Spinners had seven shutouts in each of the 2000, 2005 and 2009 seasons.

Lowell (28-20) capitalized on Scrappers mistakes early and often, scoring twice in the first inning on the aforementioned errors and one hit, and four times in the fourth on a walk, hit-by-pitch and an error patched around two hits.

Teddy Stankiewicz, a 2013 second-round (45th overall) draft pick by the Red Sox, started the game and pitched two scoreless innings. Stankiewicz struck out two batters, walked none and gave up one hit, a double in the first inning.

Sergio Gomez (3-1, 1.60) entered the game in the third and earned the victory. Gomez was the beneficiary of several spectacular defensive plays, including two double plays and an outfield assist by Williams Jerez, who threw out a runner at second to end a scoring threat in the fifth inning.

Mahoning Valley (20-28) had a hard time getting anything going off Spinners pitchers. The Scrappers scattered six hits and struck out eight times.

Forrestt Allday was hit by a pitch to lead off the game and Tzu-Wei Lin followed by reaching on a throwing error by Scrappers third baseman Robel Garcia. Kevin Mager laid down a bunt and beat out the errant throw by pitcher Luis Lugo (1-4, 1.97) to first to score Allday from second and move Lin around to third. Lin scored on a wild pitch later in the inning, making the score 2-0 Lowell after a half-inning of play.

The Spinners put runners on first and second without the benefit of a hit again in the fourth inning when catcher Danny Bethea walked and DH Nathan Minnich was hit by a pitch. Deiner Lopez doubled to left field to drive in Bethea and Minnich came home on a sacrifice fly by Carlos Asuaje. Jerez singled to right to score Lopez, putting the Spinners up 5-0. Jerez stole second - his fourth stolen base of the season - went to third on a throwing error by the catcher and scored on a single by Allday.

In the ninth, Allday reached on another error, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Mager to cap out the scoring at 7-0. Greg Larson finished the game with a perfect ninth inning in relief of Gomez.

Lin led the offense with his 13th multi-hit game of the season. He went 2-for-5 with a run scored. Lopez finished 1-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run.

Lowell has won six of its last eight games and four of its last six on the road. The Spinners are 10-6 (.625) against opponents from the Pinckney Division in the New York-Penn League, their best against-division record. They are 14-10 (.583) against the Stedler Division and 4-4 (.500) against the McNamara Division.

The Spinners final game against the Pinckney Division is when they go for the sweep of the Scrappers Thursday night, as Francisco Taveras (2-0, 1.46) takes the mound for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch.
