State College Spikes News Release

-SPIKES START SIX-GAME HOMESTAND WITH FUTURE RED SOX: The State College Spikes, who are still number one in the New York-Penn League in ERA at 2.47, begin a six-game homestand at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park tonight with the opener of a three-game series against the Lowell Spinners, affiliate of the Boston Red Sox The Spikes are currently in third place in the Pinckney Division, 2 1/2 games back of Jamestown, while Lowell stands second in the Stedler Division, three games back of Tri-City, the team with the NYPL's best record. State College is 9-10 all-time against the Spinners, but has won six of nine at home when facing Lowell.

-LAST GAME: David Washington and Mason Katz each smashed solo homers for the State College Spikes, but a late flurry by the Hudson Valley Renegades forced extra innings and allowed the Renegades to take a 3-2 victory in 12 innings on Monday at Dutchess Stadium. Washington's fifth homer of the season, a solo shot to right field in the second inning off Ben Griset, gave State College a 1-0 lead. Katz then added to the Spikes' advantage with his first home run as a professional as he sent an Anthony Tzamtzis pitch over the left-field wall to make it 2-0 headed into the eighth inning. However, the Renegades would plate two runs in that frame, and after the two teams blanked each other through the ninth, tenth and eleventh innings, Johnny Field doubled off the left-field wall in the twelfth to produce the winning run for Hudson Valley.

-PETREE, REED TEAM UP FOR SPIKES: Right-hander Nick Petree leads the way in a "piggyback" tandem on the mound for State College tonight against the Spinners. Petree has allowed just two runs all season, and has gone four innings in each of his first four pro appearances since being drafted by the Cardinals this year in the ninth round. Petree will be followed by left-hander Jimmy Reed, who took his first pro loss on Wednesday in Aberdeen after yielding the first two runs against him this season over four innings.

-SPINNERS SEND ALCANTARA TO SLAB: Right-hander Mario Alcantara gets the ball tonight for his sixth start of the year with Lowell. Last time out, the Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic native tossed five shutout, one-hit innings in a no-decision against Staten Island. Alcantara also walked three and struck out two during his tenure on Thursday. The righty has gone five innings in three of his last five starts, and aside from allowing nine runs, seven earned, over four innings on June 30 against Vermont, holds a 0.47 ERA on the year.

-SPIKES WIELDING BIG BATS IN 2013: The Spikes are among the New York-Penn League's leaders in a multitude of hitting categories, including a .278 batting average that is second in the league, 142 runs scored to place second in the NYPL, and a .411 slugging average to lead the loop. State College has compiled 13 games with 10 hits or more, including three in which the Spikes have exceeded 15 hits.
