Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

Horacek's Gem Helps 'Birds Claim Winning Home Stand

IronBirds' LHP Mitch Horacek claimed his second professional win Monday night, as he went six innings, allowing just three hits, without walking a batter. He also struck out three Crosscutters after coming on in relief of starter Steve Brault. The IronBirds got late runs courtesy of a Hector Veloz RBI single and a Mike Yastrzemski RBI walk, and won 3-1. The win game Aberdeen a 3-2 home stand and kept them in a tie for second place with the Staten Island Yankees.

Breen Ties Record

In his fourth and final at-bat, IronBirds' shortstop Jared Breen singled, extending his hitting streak to a record-tying 17 games. He then stole second and scored an insurance run in the IronBirds' 3-1 win over the Williamsport Crosscutters. He can break the record, held by Brandon Fahey, with a hit this evening. He can also extend his hitting streak, even by going hitless tonight. Breen is in the lineup, batting ninth, in the June 25th game in Staten Island that has been suspended due to a power outage. When that game is made up, should Breen get a hit, it would count as if he hit it on June 25th.

Hector Veloz Breaks Out

IronBirds' third baseman Hector Veloz singled in the fifth and scored the tying run on an Austin Wynns single. Veloz's RBI single in the seventh scored the eventual winning run. For Veloz, the two singles were his first hits since he hit two home runs back on July 4th in the IronBirds' 5-1 win over the Brooklyn Cyclones.

On the mound tonight...

Aberdeen will send LHP Jorge Rivera to the mound. Rivera made his first start of the season in his last appearance back on Thursday. Rivera went 2.1 innings, allowing five hits, one run, walking one and striking out one. The IronBirds would get the win, 3-1, and Rivera would not factor into the decision. He will be opposed by RHP Kyle Finnegan. Finnegan will be making his fifth start of the season, and his second at home. In his last outing, Finnegan went four innings, allowing just two hits, while striking out three. He has allowed just four runs (two earned) this season, and all of them came in one start. He does not have a record, and holds a 1.50 ERA in 12.0 previous innings pitched. He was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the sixth round of this year's draft, out of Texas State.

ROOOOOAD TRIP!

The IronBirds open up a three game series tonight in Vermont. Following the game Friday, they will then head off to Jamestown, NY.
