Hudson Valley Renegades News Release

WILLIAMSPORT, PA (July 16, 2013) - The Renegades first day off of 2013 came nearly one month after the season began. There were two possible scenarios as the team headed south to open a three-game series against the Williamsport Crosscutters. They could have either been re-energized from the precious time away from the diamond, or gone through a bit of a lull because of the slight break in the action. On Wednesday night, the Renegades looked tough and wasted no time in taking a sizable lead before winning the opening game by a 7-3 final.

Ariel Soriano opened the evening with a leadoff double to left off Crosscutters starter Shane Martin. After a groundout by Johnny Field moved him to third, Soriano came home on another groundball off the bat of Ty Young. But he was thrown out at the plate by first baseman Logan Pierce to quiet the threat. The game remained scoreless after Jaime Schultz threw a perfect inning in his first start of the year.

In the second, 'Gades shortstop Pat Blair reached on a two-base throwing error by third baseman Zach Green before Julian Ridings moved him to third with a sacrifice bunt. Granden Goetzman's groundball to second base was misplayed by Andrew Pullin which allowed Blair to score and give the Renegades a 1-0 lead. After Goetzman stole second, John Alexander doubled to right to plate up another run and make it 2-0.

Schultz' last inning in the third started with a single by Logan Pierce and a walk to Malquin Canelo. Justin Parr then flew out before Gustavo Martinez grounded one up the middle, allowing Blair to step on second before throwing to first to complete the inning-ending double play. Hudson Valley added two more runs with two outs in the fourth. Another Alexander double and a walk by James Harris came before Soriano advanced the runners a base with a single. Field continued his recent success at the plate with a two-run single to right to double the score and make it 4-0.

Williamsport tacked on a run against Colton Reavis in the fourth thanks to a two-out RBI double by Gabriel Lino to cut the deficit to 4-1. However, the Renegades got right back to it in the top of the fifth after Blair was hit by a pitch and Ridings singled to put runners at first and second. Alexander's night only got better with his third base hit, an RBI single which scored Blair to put the Renegades on top 5-1.

The last offensive charge of the night came in the top of the sixth against the Crosscutters Matt Soren. Soriano singled with one out and stole both second and third with Field at the plate before the Rays' fifth round pick drove in his third run with another single to right. With Young batting, Field was on the move and stole second before moving to third on a wild pitch. The youth movement prevailed once again for manager Michael Johns as Young singled to right to bring up Field and give the 'Gades a 7-1 lead. Williamsport added a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth but it was too little, too late.

NOTES: Reavis (1-0) earned his first professional victory with three innings of relief, allowing one run and striking out four...Willie Gabay made his Renegades debut and threw two scoreless innings after being called up from the Gulf Coast League over the weekend...Soriano, Field, and Alexander each had three hits and the Renegades finished with 12...it was Alexander's first three-hit game of the season.

The series continues on Thursday night at 7:05 PM in the middle game of three. Hudson Valley's Kevin Brandt (2-2, 2.57 ERA) will look to win his second start against Williamsport's Mitch Gueller (3-1, 3.63 ERA). The Renegades return home for the start of a five-game homestand on Tuesday, July 23 against the Tri-City ValleyCats in a rematch of last year's League Championship Series.
