Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Burlington, VT- The Aberdeen IronBirds used the middle of their line up to power past the Vermont Lake Monsters, 5-1 on Wednesday night. The 3-4-5 hitters in Manager Matt Merullo's line up- Trey Mancini, Conor Bierfeldt, and Mike Yastrzemski- combined to go 5-10 on the evening, scoring all five of Aberdeen's runs.
Mancini got things going for Aberdeen in the fourth. He hit a two out single, immediately followed by an RBI double from Bierfeldt, making it 1-0 IronBirds. Yastrzemski then traded places with Bierfeldt, doubling the IronBirds' lead.
Vermont got their lone run in the bottom of the fourth, as Boog Powell worked a leadoff walk and would score three batters later on a Ryan Huck RBI single, and it was 2-1 Aberdeen.
The IronBirds scored twice more in the sixth, again courtesy of the middle of the order. Mancini roped a one out double, and was followed by a Bierfeldt walk. Yastrzemski hit an RBI single, scoring Mancini and advancing Bierfeldt to third. Hector Veloz claimed another RBI after a sacrifice fly to second baseman Chris Wolfe. Wolfe caught the ball on the foul line half way into the outfield and, with his back to home plate, Bierfeldt was able to score. It was 4-1 Aberdeen after six innings.
In the ninth, the IronBirds would add one more tally. Yastrzemski worked a lead off walk and came in to score when Federico Castagnini reached on an error charged to Vermont third baseman Luis Baez, making it 5-1.
Jared Breen did not record a hit, but the hitting streak is not over as of yet. Breen is still in the lineup for the game in Staten Island that was suspended due to a power outage. If Breen records a hit when that game is completed, he would set the franchise mark for the longest hitting streak.
Jimmy Yacabonis pitched two perfect innings of relief and got his first win. Austin Urban worked the eighth and ninth for his first save. Kyle Finnegan took the loss.
Aberdeen will look to win the series tomorrow when they send Dylan Rhealt to the hill. First Pitch from Burlington is set for 7:05 p.m.
