July 10, 2013 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
State College Spikes News Release
-NYPL-BEST SPIKES HIT ROAD AGAINST ABERDEEN: The State College Spikes, who are number one in the New York-Penn League in batting average (.287), runs scored (130), ERA (2.48) and overall record, begin a six-game road trip tonight with the first of three matchups against the Aberdeen IronBirds. The Spikes' 14-8 record matches Jamestown for tops in the NYPL, while Aberdeen currently occupies second place in the McNamara Division. The three-game set against Aberdeen marks the first out-of-division action for the Spikes this season. The IronBirds hold the lead in the all-time series, 13-7, with a 6-2 record in games played at Ripken Stadium.
-LAST GAME: The Spikes clinched the best start after 22 games in franchise history thanks to Tuesday night's 12-5 win over the Mahoning Valley Scrappers at the Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Ronald Castillo, Luke Voit and David Washington all homered for State College in a 17-hit outburst for the Spikes. State College trailed twice, but came back each time and poured it on with six runs in the seventh to notch their fourth straight win. Castillo, Washington, Jimmy Bosco and Bruce Caldwell all collected three hits for the Spikes, with Castillo falling just a double shy of the cycle. Victor DeLeon got the win for State College despite allowing three runs in his only inning of work.
-REED COMES HOME TO START FOR SPIKES TONIGHT: Left-hander Jimmy Reed, a native of Gaithersburg, MD and a product of the University of Maryland, makes his return to his home state as he starts a "piggyback" rotation on the mound for State College tonight. Reed has not allowed an earned run in his first nine innings of professional ball, and got the win last time out with four three-hit innings of scoreless relief against Williamsport last Wednesday. Right-hander Nick Petree, the Missouri State product who holds a 1.50 ERA on the season, will follow Reed on the mound this evening
-HORACEK TO HANDLE MOUND DUTIES FOR IRONBIRDS: Left-hander Mitch Horacek gets the ball for Mahoning Valley tonight in his third start with Aberdeen. Horacek was a ninth-round draft choice of the Orioles this year out of Dartmouth, where he was part of a Big Green staff that posted a 2.75 ERA to lead the Ivy League. The southpaw went 6-2 with a 2.20 ERA in eight starts covering 45 innings this spring. Last time out with the IronBirds, Horacek tossed four one-hit, shutout innings and struck out three vs. Brooklyn on July 4.
