Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MASS. - In a game delayed 17 minutes by rain, the Lowell Spinners sent everyone home happy as Kevin Mager drove in Manuel Margot with a bloop single to right-field in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Spinners a 2-1 win Wednesday night at LeLacheur Park.
The win puts the Spinners just a half-game back of the Stedler Division leading Tri-City ValleyCats after they were rained out in Mahoning Valley Wednesday night.
Staten Island (11-11) took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning, taking advantage of an error by Nick Moore on an attempted pick-off play at first. After Sergio Gomez picked up the innings second out, Bubba Jones singled through the hole at second, scoring the run and giving the Yankees the early lead.
Lowell (13-9) had a chance to take a lead in the fifth inning after Carlos Asuaje led off the inning with a double. However Cleuluis Rondon's comebacker to the mound froze Asuaje between second and third and he was tagged out at third. After Rondon stole second and Moore walked the Yankees went to the bullpen for Andrew Benak and David Sopilka took the first pitch he saw off the left field wall for a double to knot the score at one before Benak got out of the inning.
The Spinners took the lead in the eighth inning when Margot doubled with one out. Mager was jammed, but dropped one into shallow right field as Margot raced home to give the Spinners a 2-1 lead.
The Yankees threatened in the top half of the ninth inning, as a one-out hit batter and two-out walk gave Staten Island life, but Joe Gunkel came back to induce a groundout to end the threat and preserve the win.
Gomez was strong again, allowing just the unearned run in six innings. He allowed four hits and walked two, striking out six. Kyle Martin (2-1, 0.82) allowed just one hit while striking out two in two scoreless for the win. Gunkel picked up the save in his second outing for the team, striking out one.
Mager led the Spinners offense with a 2-for-4 night, while Sopilka also went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Aaron King saw his nine-game hitting streak snapped, going 0-for-4.
The two teams meet again Thursday night at LeLacheur Park on Will Middlebrooks jersey giveaway, sponsored by WKLB Country 102.5. Mario Alcantara (2-1, 4.00) gets the ball for a 7:05 first pitch.
