Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

Vega, ‘Birds come alive in the 10th

The IronBirds won yesterday, 8-2, in 10 innings over the Tri-City ValleyCats, and took the rubber match of the three game set. Anthony Vega hit his second home run of the season, a three run shot off of Pat Christensen, as the IronBirds scored six runs on five hits in the 10th, earning their 12th win on the season. The IronBirds faced number one overall draft pick Mark Appel yesterday. Appel went three innings, allowing three hits, striking out five IronBirds batters. David Richardson earned his second win of the season.

Newsworthy Items

Jared Breen extended his hitting streak to 12 games. That is tied for the fifth best streak in franchise history, joining Val Majewski (2002), Neal Stephenson (2002), and Ryan Finan (2005). The longest hitting streak in team history belongs to Brandon Fahey, who had a 17 game streak from June 30-July 17, 2002. Also, the IronBirds are 12-10 after 22 games. That is their best mark since the team was 14-8 in 2006, when they would finish with their best record in team history at 41-34.

Winner, Winner!

The IronBirds were the only McNamara Division team to win yesterday, meaning they leapfrogged Staten Island for second place and sit just a half game out of first, a spot still held onto by the Hudson Valley Renegades.

No rest for the IronBirds

The IronBirds, for a second consecutive series, will play a first place team. The Tri-City ValleyCats lead the Stedler Division by a game over the Lowell Spinners. Tonight's opponent, the State College Spikes, are tied for first place in the Pinckney Division with the Jamestown Jammers. Both teams hold records of 14-8.

On the mound tonight...

LHP Mitch Horacek will get the start tonight for Aberdeen. Horacek will be making his third start, all of them coming at home. In his last start, Horacek went four innings, allowing just one hit, and striking out three. He did not factor into the decision as the IronBirds would beat the Brooklyn Cyclones 5-1. The Spikes will send LHP Jimmy Reed to the hill. Reed, from Gaithersburg, Maryland, will be making his second start and his fourth appearance on the season. The Cardinals' 6th round draft pick this year, Reed comes into tonight with a 1-0 record and a 0.00 ERA.
