Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BATAVIA, NY --- Felix Munoz went 2-for-4 with a solo homer and three RBI as the Batavia Muckdogs used a six-run second inning to defeat the Vermont Lake Monsters 8-6 in the first of a three-game New York-Penn League series Wednesday night at Dwyer Stadium.
Vermont had taken a 2-0 lead in the top of the second on a Tyler Marincov RBI single and a run-scoring field error, but the Muckdogs knocked around Lake Monsters starter Jerad Grundy for a trio of two-out, two-run hits in the bottom of the inning. Luis Ortiz tied the game with a two-run double and then, after back-to-back walks, Munoz gave Batavia the lead with a two-run single. Avery Romero capped off the inning with a two-run double to center for the 6-2 lead.
Batavia added a pair of runs in the fifth on a leadoff homer from Munoz and Coco Johnson sacrifice fly for an 8-2 advantage. The Lake Monsters chipped away at the deficit with single runs in the sixth on another run-scoring fielder error and eighth inning on a Boog Powell RBI double, then added a pair of runs in the ninth on a run-scoring wild pitch and Wilfredo Solano RBI groundout.
Tyler Marincov followed the RBI groundout with his third single of the game to bring the potential tying run to the plate, but Batavia reliever Colby Suggs came on to get pinch hitter Jaycob Brugman to line out to right field to end the game and snap a Batavia six-game losing streak to the Lake Monsters dating back to the 2010 season.
Both team had seven hits for the game, but the Lake Monsters weren't able to take advantage of five Batavia walks and five Muckdog errors as Vermont went just 2-for-20 with runners in scoring position (1-for-6 with runner on third and less than two outs). The Lake Monsters defense went errorless for their fourth straight game, the team's longest streak since six straight games to open the 2007 season.
Marincov went 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI for Vermont, while Grundy (0-2) was charged with six runs on five hits and three walks in 1 2/3 innings for the loss. Reliever Lou Trivino gave up two runs on two hits over 4 1/3 innings and Fernand Cruzado two hitless innings with two strikeouts for Vermont (10-13).
The Lake Monsters and Muckdogs will play the second of the three-game series at Batavia on Thursday starting at 7:00 pm. Vermont is currently on a six-game roadtrip and will return home to historic Centennial Field on July 17th.
