State College Spikes News Release
STATE COLLEGE - For the first time in 2010, the State College Spikes took the first lead in the game, and never yielded as they downed the Jamestown Jammers, 6-2, at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Friday night.
Chase Lyles knocked in Justin Bencsko with an RBI double to get the ball rolling in the first inning for the Spikes (3-5). State College then took advantage of three straight walks to start the fourth inning, plating three more runs thanks to a two-run single by Gerlis Rodriguez and an RBI base hit by Walker Gourley.
Rodriguez recovered from a 1-for-20 start to the year to join Bencsko in finishing the game with two hits, while Kelson Brown added an RBI single for the Spikes. Gift Ngoepe also aided the State College cause by reaching base four times on the night, walking three times and being hit by a pitch.
Brooks Pounders (1-1) earned the victory for the Spikes with five strong innings of work in front of 4,691 fans in his first-ever start at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Pounders retired the first 11 hitters he faced, and allowed just two runs on three hits while striking out two. Ryan Beckman (1) notched the save after finishing the game with four scoreless innings of work, allowing one hit and one walk.
Jamestown (4-4) starter Albaro Estevez (0-2) took the loss after allowing three runs on two hits and four walks. Estevez also struck out one batter.
Marcell Ozuna hit his second home run in as many nights against the Spikes, going deep off of Pounders in the fourth with a solo shot over the right-field wall.
Saturday, State College starts a five-game road trip with the first of two games against the Batavia Muckdogs at Dwyer Stadium. The Spikes will send out right-hander Kevin Decker (0-0) for his second start of the season. Decker allowed one run on two hits in three innings of work against Batavia on Monday in his first start after an undefeated season at the College of Charleston. Batavia will counter with left-hander Anthony Ferrara (1-0).
Fans can catch all of the action on the Spikes Radio Network and flagship station 95.3 FM 3WZ starting at 6:50 p.m. with the Spikes GameDay Show live from Dwyer Stadium.
