Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

TROY, NY --- Connor Rowe and and Blake Kelso both had RBI singles in the top of the 10th inning as the Vermont Lake Monsters were able to finally put away the Tri-City ValleyCats in a 9-7 New York-Penn League victory at Bruno Stadium Friday night.

The Lake Monsters led 6-2 when Tri-City scored two runs in the seventh inning and then got a two-run homer from Andrew Bailey in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game 6-6. Vermont was able to take a 7-6 lead in the top of the ninth on a Stephen King solo homer, but the ValleyCats again tied the game in the bottom of the ninth on a two-out homer from Ben Heath.

Cole Leonida led off the 10th with a single and pinch runner Hendry Jimenez advanced to second on a Ronnie LaBrie sacrifice bunt. After a three-pitch strikeout of Marcus Jones for the second out, Rowe was able to ground an 0-2 pitch into leftfield to score Jimenez with the go ahead run. Kelso followed with Vermont's 17th hit of the game, an RBI single to left for the insurance run.

The 17 Lake Monster hits were the most by a Vermont team since they had 17 hits at Tri-City on September 8, 2005. Each of the nine starters in the order had at least one hit, including three-hit games for Kelso and Jones.

The game was tied at 1-1 in the fifth when Rowe, who was added to the Lake Monsters roster on Thurday when Rick Hughes went on the disabled list, hit a two-run homer to leftfield. It was Vermont's second home run of the season and the first in 225 at bats since Wade Moore homered in the season-opener on June 18th.

Vermont added two more runs in the sixth for a 5-1 lead, then got a Moore RBI single in the seventh inning for the 6-2 lead. Lake Monster starter Matt Swynenberg allowed one run on three hits over five innings, but got a no-decision as reliever Colin Bates gave up the two runs in the seventh and Shane Zellers the two-run homer in the eighth that tied the game 6-6.

After King's homer had given Vermont the 7-6 lead in the ninth, Dustin Crane retired the first two batters he faced before giving up the two-out Heath game-tying home run. After Vermont retook the lead in the 10th, Crane (1-0) got two strikeouts in the bottom of the inning for the win.

King had a home run and double for the Lake Monsters, while two of Jones' three hits were doubles. Chad Mozingo, Moore and Rowe each had two hits for Vermont, while Adam Bailey was 3-for-4 with three RBI for Tri-City (3-5).

The win was the second extra-inning victory of the three-game series for Vermont, which has now won each of the first three series that they have played this season. The Lake Monsters are now 6-2, the second-best record that Vermont has had after eight games in its 17-year history (8-0 in 2001).

Vermont's five-game roadtrip continues with single games at Connecticut Saturday at 7:05 pm and Sunday afternoon at 1:05 pm. The Lake Monsters return home to Centennial Field for a three-game series against the ValleyCats beginning on Monday night.
