Hudson Valley Renegades News Release

The Hudson Valley Renegades hosted the Brooklyn Cyclones in New York Penn League action tonight, June 25, 2010. The game had a decidedly different feel than last night's lopsided Cyclones victory; as the Renegades notched their third one-run win of the season, 4-3.

Brooklyn took the first lead of the night in the third inning. With Cyclones third baseman Joe Bonfe on base via a leadoff single, catcher Taylor Freeman smacked a home run over the left field wall, putting his team up 2-0. After Renegades starter Wilmer Almonte (6IP, 7H, 3R/3ER, 5SO, 1BB) retired the next two hitters, speedy Brooklyn centerfielder Darrell Ceciliani poked a groundball triple down the right field line, scoring two batters later on Jeff Flagg's RBI single up the middle.

The Cyclones would not score again.

In the bottom of the third, Hudson Valley shortstop Derek Dietrich was hit by a pitch with one out, and moved to third on Nick Schwaner's ground rule double. On the next play, Dietrich scored on Stephen TInoco's groundout. Schwaner was tagged out trying to take third on the play, and the third inning ended with a 3-1 Cyclone advantage.

The two teams traded scoreless frames until the bottom of the ninth inning, when Steven Tinoco led off for the Renegades with an infield single, and advanced to second on an error by Brooklyn shortstop Rylan Sandoval. With one out, Mayo Acota laced a double into left field, scoring Tinoco and cutting the margin to 3-2. After Chris Winder struck out, Renegades rightfielder Brian Bryles singled to left, scoring Acosta with the tying run, and advancing to second on the throw home.

With two outs, and Bryles on second, Hudson Valley centerfielder Chris Lyerly sent the happy crowd home with a sizzling RBI double to deep centerfield. Lyerly's two-base hit scored Bryles, ending the game, and giving the Renegades their third home victory in as many tries.

Robert Dickmann made his second appearance of the year out of the bullpen for the Renegades, throwing two scoreless frames and keeping his ERA at zero. Austin Hubbard (1-0) pitched a scoreless ninth inning, and became the third different Hudson Valley reliever to capture a victory at home this year.

The host Renegades captured tonight's walk-off win in front of a franchise-record crowd of 5,361 loyal fans. Tonight's attendance broke the previous Renegades' franchise record of 5,253, set on July 16th, 2009, on a rainy night against the Batavia Muckdogs.

Tomorrow the Renegades travel to Staten Island to take on the Yankees for a two-game series. The Renegades will give the ball to righty Miguel Sierra (0-1, 6.75) and the Yankees will counter with right-hander Wilton Rodriguez (0-1, 3.38) with the first pitch slated for 7:00 p.m. Saturday night.
