State College Spikes News Release
LOWELL, Mass. - A five-run second inning and another quality outing on the mound for Jim Voyles helped the State College Spikes top the Lowell Spinners, 9-3, on Friday night at LeLacheur Park.
The Spikes (16-23) notched their second consecutive victory on the road in taking the opener of the three-game series over the Spinners (21-19).
Brady Whalen's three-run double served as the linchpin of State College's big second inning. Whalen upped his RBI count on the year to 23, putting him into a tie for fourth in the New York-Penn League.
Nick Dunn, who went 2-for-4 with a double, also drove in a run after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the second.
Stanley Espinal, who began the 2017 season with Lowell before being traded from the Red Sox to the Cardinals on July 2, also produced two hits, including a double, and knocked in a run.
Voyles (3-3) made the Spikes' big lead stand up with his third straight start of six innings or more while allowing three earned runs or less, and his fourth of the season. The right-hander faced the minimum over the first five innings, and yielded just one run on a total of four hits and a walk over six innings of work. Voyles also struck out two batters.
Brandon Benson added two hits, including his first triple of the year, while driving in one run and scoring two himself.
Lowell starter Chris Machamer (0-2) took the loss after giving up six runs, but only one earned, on five hits, a walk and a hit batsman over 1 2/3 innings. Machamer struck out two batters in the effort.
The Spikes and Spinners will meet for the second game of their three-game set on Saturday night at 5:35 p.m. at LeLacheur Park. State College left-hander Jake Dahlberg (0-2), who has not allowed an earned run over his last 16 innings on the mound, gets the start against Lowell right-hander Eduard Bazardo (4-2), who is fifth in the NYPL with a 2.08 ERA.
Following the series in Lowell, the Spikes will head back to Happy Valley for a six-game homestand at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park that begins on Monday, July 30.
