Tri-City ValleyCats News Release

TROY, NY - Despite 15 hits and a four-run first inning, the Tri-City ValleyCats (8-10) couldn't overcome the State College Spikes (13-5) offense in a 9-7 loss on Independence Day at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium.

Pitching in his first professional start, righty Kevin Hill gave up five runs in the first two innings, and the ValleyCats bullpen didn't fair much better. Austin Nicely allowed only three hits over four innings of relief, but two of the hits were solo home runs, and Josue Uribe allowed two runs in 0.2 innings.

Stephen Wrenn extended his on-base streak to 17 games in the loss with a 2-RBI double in the first inning, and later added another double in the 7th. Wrenn has reached base in all 17 games he's played this season.

Randy Cesar and Chuckie Robinson both turned in three-hit performances, combining for a run and two RBI. Cesar extended his hitting streak to six games, and raised his batting average to .344.

Base running mistakes cost the 'Cats mightily throughout the game. Brauly Mejia was caught in a pickle trying to advance from third to home in the first, ending the inning. Wrenn was picked off of first to end the 5th inning and Ronnie Dawson was caught stealing after leading off the 7th with a base hit.

Steven Farinaro (2-0) earned the win in his fourth start of the year, even though he was touched up for eleven hits and six runs in 5.2 innings. Bob Wheatley, Greg Tomchick and Eric Carter combined to allow three innings of one-run relief, striking out three in the final three frames.

The ValleyCats are back in action for Game 2 of the series against the Spikes tomorrow night, July 5. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 pm, with Ryan Hartman on the hill for the 'Cats and Ronnie Williams taking the ball for the Spikes.
