Hudson Valley Renegades News Release

STATEN ISLAND, NY-- A little heart and some big hustle by the Renegades allowed Hudson Valley to sneak out of Staten Island with a 3-2 win on Monday night at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. The Renegades got on the board in the second inning. With one out, third baseman Jon Popadics singled then moved to second on a wild pitch. He scored when first baseman Jose Rojas laced a double off of the leftfield wall to give the Renegades a 1-0 lead. The single by Popadics gave him a team-high 10-game hitting steak.

Hudson Valley added a second run in the fifth. Shortstop Bill Pujols led off the inning with a bunt single before moving to second on a stolen base. A wild pitch sent Pujols to third before he scored on an RBI groundout by centerfielder Jake Fraley to give the Renegades a 2-0 lead.

Hudson Valley nearly threw the game away after giving up two unearned runs in the sixth. Reliever Brandon Lawson rushed a throw to first on a bunt attempt by Staten Island's Ricardo Ferreira that pulled the first baseman off the bag. Second baseman Nick Solak followed with an infield single that put runners at first and second. A wild pitch moved runners to second and third with one out when first baseman Kane Sweeney grounded the ball to first baseman Jose Rojas. The ball went right between Rojas' legs, allowing both runners to score and tying the game at two.

However, the Renegades showed some grit tonight as they came back with the winning run in the eighth. Rightfielder Angel Perez led off the inning with a walk, then went from first to third on a sac bunt after the Yankees failed to cover third on the play. A wild pitch by Staten Island reliever Brooks Kriske allowed Perez to score and give Hudson Valley a 3-2 lead.

The bullpen took over from there as Lawson (1-1) settled down after the two-run error and tossed three innings of two hit ball while striking out six. He left go ahead and tying runs at second in the sixth and eighth and got his first win of the year. Joe Serrapica (2) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth and struck out one to pick up his second save of the year. Hudson Valley starter Travis Ott started and pitched well allowing only one hit and no runs in five innings while striking out four.

Kriske (0-1) suffered the loss for the Yankees after allowing a run on two hits in 1.1 innings of work. The loss ruined a great performance by Staten Island starter Simon De La Rosa who struck out 10 while allowing two runs in 6.2 innings.

The Renegades pounded out 10 hits including three from Popadics who had two singles, a double and a run scored. Rojas went 2-5 with a double and RBI, and leftfielder Ryan Boldt chipped in by going 2-5.

The Yankees only had four hits but got a double and single by catcher Luis Torrens.

The Renegades come back home Tuesday for their Independence Day celebration against Staten Island. First-pitch is set for 7:05 and will be followed by a fireworks show. Adrian Navas (1-1, 3.75 ERA) will go for the Renegades against Adonis Rosa (1-0, 2.00 ERA) for the Yankees. For tickets, call 845-838-0094 or go to hvrenegades.com.
