Auburn Doubledays News Release
The Auburn Doubledays, Single-A Short Season affiliate of the Washington Nationals, beat the Lowell Spinners, 4-2, on a Fourth of July Monday at Falcon Park. Doubledays third baseman Sheldon Neuse knocked in two runs en route to the win.
The Doubledays (11-7) scored first in the bottom of the third inning off Spinners left-hander Enmanuel De Jesus. With one out, Dalton Dulin singled. After a Blake Perkins strikeout, De Jesus walked Daniel Johnson and Kelvin Gutierrez to load the bases with two outs. Neuse then singled to right field to score Dulin and Johnson and give Auburn a 2-0 lead.
The Spinners (12-6) scored in the fourth inning off Doubledays right-hander Carlos Acevedo. Chris Madera led off the inning with a single. Madera advanced to third base when Tyler Hill singled to put runners on the corners with no outs. With Jerry Downs batting, Auburn catcher Luis Vilorio caught Hill stealing second base for the first out of the inning. Downs singled to right field to score Madera, but the Doubledays still led, 2-1.
Lowell tied the game in the top of the sixth inning off Auburn reliever Steven Fuentes. With two outs, Hill singled. Downs then struck out, but the third strikeout was a wild pitch that went to the backstop, which allowed Downs to reach first base and Hill to move to second. With Tucker Tubbs batting, Fuentes threw another wild pitch to advance Hill and Downs to third base and second base. Fuentes then threw his third wild pitch of the inning, which allowed Hill to score from third base to tie the game at two.
The Doubledays responded with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning off of Spinners reliever Dioscar Romero. Clayton Brandt walked to lead off the inning. Vilorio and Dulin followed with back-to-back singles to load the bases. After a Perkins line out to third base, Daniel Johnson hit a ball in front of the pitching mound that Romero misplayed to allow Brandt to score, Vilorio to move to third base, Dulin to advance to second, and Johnson to reach first, giving Auburn a 3-2 advantage. Kelvin Gutierrez then hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Vilorio and put the Doubledays back up by two runs, 4-2.
Auburn's bullpen was stellar. Fuentes got the win with three innings of two-hit, one-run baseball. Phil Morse picked up his first save for the Doubledays with one inning of scoreless baseball.
The Doubledays and the Spinners return to action Tuesday night for the second game of a three-game series. Left-hander Tyler Watson will make his fourth start for Auburn, while right-hander Kevin Steen will be on the mound for Lowell. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. from Falcon Park.
