NILES, OH --- Three Vermont pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout and all nine batters had one hit apiece in the Lake Monsters 7-0 shutout win at Mahoning Valley on Tuesday night in New York-Penn League action at Eastwood Field.
Starter Xavier Altamirano allowed just three hits with two walks and five strikeouts over the first five innings to earn the victory. With the five scoreless frames, Vermont starting pitchers have not allowed an earned run in 17 straight innings and lowered starters ERA 1.71 overall.
Eric Marinez gave the Lake Monsters a 1-0 lead in the second with a one-out solo home run to right field. Marinez added an RBI groundout in the sixth and Sean Murphy followed with a two-run single to increase the Vermont advantage to 4-0.
The Lake Monsters added three more runs in the seventh on a Jesus Lopez RBI single, Jhonny Rodriguez sacrifice fly and a Marinez RBI forceout for his third RBI of the game.
Reliever Dalton Sawyer gave up one hit, walked two and struckout three in his three scoreless innings, while Branden Kelliher tossed a 1-2-3 ninth inning to secure Vermont's second shutout win of the season and lower team ERA to a NYPL-leading 2.33 overall.
V ermont (10-9) has now won six of its last eight games and are 10-5 since starting the season with four straight losses to move over the .500 mark for the first time since June 23, 2014 (6-5).
Scrappers starter Luis Jimenez (0-3) allowed one run on three hits and three strikeouts over five innings for the loss, while reliever Dace Kime was charged with six runs on six hits and two walks in one-plus innings for Mahoning Valley (4-15).
Vermont will go for the series sweep at Mahoning Valley on Wednesday at 7:05 pm before a scheduled off day on Thursday. The Lake Monsters return home to historic Centennial Field for a three-game series against Batavia Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
