Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
FISHKILL, NY - Hudson Valley starter Adrian Navas fired six innings of one hit ball, and the Renegades got their first homer of the year from an unlikely source in a 4-2 win Tuesday night at Dutchess Stadium over the Staten Island Yankees.
The game was a bona fide pitcher's duel as starters Adrian Navas for the Renegades and Adonis Rosa for the Yankees matched each other zero for zero, allowing only a combined three hits through the first five-and-a-half innings.
The scoreless deadlock was finally broken in the sixth inning when light-hitting shortstop Bill Pujols (1) led off the inning with a solo homer to give Hudson Valley a 1-0 lead. For the Renegades it was their first homer of the year and they became the last team in the New York-Penn League to hit a homerun this season.
The Renegades then took control of the game with a three-run eighth as Hudson Valley sent eight men to the plate. After Pujols led off the frame with a single, he stole second then scored on a one-out triple by centerfielder Garrett Whitley to put the Renegades up two. Whitley scored when the next hitter, third baseman Jim Haley, laced a single to left to make the score 3-0. Hudson Valley wrapped up the scoring when rightfielder Angel Perez brought Haley home with a single of his own to give the Renegades a 4-0 lead.
The Yankees made things interesting as three-straight hits brought the score to 4-2. Catcher Luis Torrens' double brought in centerfielder Ricardo Ferreira from first and first baseman Kane Sweeney scored third baseman Drew Bridges on a single for the Yankees' only runs with one out. However, Hudson Valley reliever Tim Ingram settled down and got a strikeout and fly out to end the game.
Navas (2-1) picked up the win by tossing six innings of shutout, one-hit ball to pick up his team-leading second win of the season. The tough-luck loser for Staten Island was their starter Adonis Rosa (1-1) who allowed the homerun to Pujols on five hits in 6.1 innings of work.
The Renegades got nine hits and were led by Pujols' 3-3 effort with a homer, double and single to go along with two runs scored and a stolen base. Whitley went 2-4 with an RBI triple, and Haley went 2-4 with an RBI single.
The Yankees had five hits in the game, but the only extra-base hit was the RBI double by Torrens in the ninth.
Hudson Valley heads to Staten Island to wrap-up their three-game series with an 11:00am start against the Yankees. Southpaw Eduar Lopez (1-1, 2.25 ERA) will pitch for the Renegades against righty Drew Finley (0-1, 2.04 ERA) of the Yankees. The Renegades will return to Dutchess Stadium on Monday when they open a three-game series against the West Virginia Black Bears. First pitch is slated for 7:05.
