State College Spikes News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PA -- Zack Von Rosenberg started the game with three shutout innings, but the Mahoning Valley Scrappers had enough offense to top the State College Spikes, 4-1, on Monday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
Von Rosenberg yielded just three hits and struck out three during his tenure on the mound, leaving with the game still scoreless. Mahoning Valley (27-36) then broke through with a pair of runs in the fifth inning, with both scoring on a Brooks Pounders
wild pitch. The Scrappers added another run in the seventh before State College (30-32) got onto the scoreboard when a hit by pitch, a stolen base and a walk combined to score Pat Irvine and draw the Spikes within two.
Mahoning Valley was able to add an insurance run in the ninth, however, to reach its final margin of victory.
Irvine, Drew Maggi and Chase Lyles each reached base twice for the Spikes, who were held to just three hits total by Scrappers pitching.
Pounders took the loss for State College after allowing two runs on one hit and two walks.
Mahoning Valley starter Casey Gaynor (5-2) earned the win with 5 1/3 scoreless innings of work, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out four. J.B. Reichenbach (3) picked up the save by recording the last eight outs consecutively while striking out two.
Spikes fans were also thrilled by the presence of George "The Animal" Steele at the park. The legendary wrestling superstar ate the cover off of the ball for his ceremonial first pitch, guested on the Spikes GameDay Show, and ended up emceeing a turnbuckle-eating contest on the field. Steele also signed autographs for fans during the Spikes' Wrestling Rumble Night.
Tuesday, the Spikes and Scrappers both head back to eastern Ohio as the scene shifts to Eastwood Field for another three-game series between the two teams. State College will send left-hander Zack Dodson (2-3) to the mound to face Mahoning Valley lefty Mike Rayl (1-4). The six-game stretch against a single opponent is only the third such run in Spikes history, after two similar streaks in 2006 against Jamestown and Auburn.
Fans can catch all of the action on Wednesday via the Spikes Radio Network and flagship station 95.3 FM 3WZ starting at 6:50 p.m. with the Spikes GameDay Show live from Eastwood Field.
The Spikes' radio broadcast can also be heard worldwide through the "Listen Live" link on StateCollegeSpikes.com, provided by 95.3 FM 3WZ.
