Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Staten Island, NY - The Aberdeen IronBirds couldn't get much going offensively on Monday evening as they fell to the Staten Island Yankees 5-1.
Kyle Roller gave the Yankees a three-run lead in the fourth. With two on and one out, Roller (5) blasted a three-run homer to right field to give Staten Island a 3-0 lead.
The Yankees tacked on another run in the fifth. With runners on the corners and one down, Shane Brown knocked in a run with a ground out to shortstop.
IronBirds starting pitcher Tyler Sexton left the game with two outs in the fifth. He surrendered four runs, all earned, on five hits. He walked two and struck out five.
Baltimore Orioles third-round pick Dan Klein made his pro debut in the seventh. He pitched a perfect inning.
The IronBirds got on the scoreboard in the eighth. Tyler Stampone and David Anderson singled, putting runners on the corners with one man down. Austin Rauch grounded into a fielder's choice, scoring Stampone, and making it 4-1.
Staten Island got the run back in the eighth. In his professional debut, Alex Schmarzo hit Robert Segedin with two men out. He scored when Roller tripled to left field.
Nik Turley (4-3) got the win for the Yankees. Turley pitched five shutout innings. He allowed two hits and six walks, and struck out four. Sexton (1-6) took the loss.
The IronBirds and the Yankees will meet in the finale of this two-game series Tuesday evening at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM. Catch the internet broadcast at www.IronBirdsbaseball.com . The PNC Pregame Show will begin at 6:50 PM.
The IronBirds return to Aberdeen next Saturday, August 28th, for a three-game series with the Vermont Lake Monsters. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
