State College Spikes News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PA - Thunderstorms in the State College area forced the State College Spikes and Jamestown Jammers to halt their game at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park in the bottom of the second inning on Tuesday night, with the Spikes leading, 2-0. The two teams will resume the contest on Thursday, August 29 as part of a makeshift doubleheader, with the completion of the suspended game to be followed by a seven-inning game between the Spikes and Jammers.
A start time for the completion of Tuesday's game will be announced at a later date.
Tickets for Tuesday night's game can redeemed for a ticket of equal or lesser value to any remaining Spikes home game in 2013, based on availability. Fans can redeem their tickets by visiting the Medlar Field at Lubrano Park Box Office, or by calling (814) 272-1711 for more information on ticket redemption.
The game was stopped just after Alex De Leon began his at-bat to start the bottom of the second inning when lightning and heavy rain forced both teams off of the field. More lightning strikes also caused Medlar Field at Lubrano Park to lose power for approximately one hour after both teams were back in the clubhouse. Power was later restored but the severe weather caused the game to be called.
State College (5-3) had taken the lead in the first as Bruce Caldwell doubled in the Spikes' initial run and two Jamestown (5-3) errors led to Caldwell crossing the plate.
Kevin Herget was the pitcher of record for the Spikes at the time the game was stopped after starting and going four innings on the mound. Herget allowed four hits and a walk.
The Spikes will now begin a six-game road trip on Wednesday as they travel to Eastwood Field in Niles, OH to face the Mahoning Valley Scrappers in a 7:05 p.m. matchup. State College will send left-hander Ben O'Shea (1-0) to the mound for the first game of a two-game set against Mahoning Valley. The Scrappers are scheduled to give the ball to right-hander Cole Sulser (0-0).
Following the series in Mahoning Valley, the Spikes will make a three-game trip to Batavia and then head to Historic Bowman Field to play the first game of a three-game set against the Williamsport Crosscutters before returning home on Tuesday, July 2 to face the Crosscutters at 7:05 p.m.
Medlar Field at Lubrano Park will once again go to the dogs that evening as fans are invited to bring their favorite four-legged friends out to the Spikes' first " Bark in the Park " Night of the season, presented by Metzger Animal Hospital, NEWSRADIO 103 and the Centre Daily Times. Fans will be able to watch the game with their canine pals in the Outfield Bleachers as well as on the concourse. All dogs must be leashed or crated, and owners will be asked to provide their dog's vaccination records. If no records are available, owners will be required to sign a liability waiver.
The first 500 dog owners at the park will also get a cool Spikes t-shirt presented by Metzger Animal Hospital on T-Shirt Tuesday, and 16 oz. Yuengling and Yuengling Light drafts will be available for just $2.50 during the Yuengling Happy Hour from 6-7 p.m.
