
ValleyCats Hold off CT Tigers

Norwich, CT - The Tri-City ValleyCats held off the Connecticut Tigers Tuesday night with an 8-6 victory at Dodd Stadium. In the top of the fourth inning C Ernesto Gernoves (2-4) hit a soft ground ball to RHP Nick Carmichael who threw wide of 1B Jesus Ustariz (0-4) that scored DH Dan Gulbransen (3-5) to put the ValleyCats in front 1-0. RF Ronnie Mitchell (2-4) added an RBI triple that scored Gernoves to take a 2-0 lead. The ValleyCats added two more runs in the inning to take a 4-0 lead.
In the top of the fifth inning Gulbransen added an RBI double that scored 1B Conrad Gregor (1-4) to take a 5-0 lead. LF Jon Kemmer (0-4) added a sacrifice fly that scored Gulbransen to take a 6-0 lead. Mitchell followed with a two-run homerun out to deep right field to take a commanding 8-0 lead.
The Tigers attempted a rally in the later innings. They got on the scoreboard in the sixth inning following a two-run homerun from CF Kasey Coffman (1-4) to make the score 8-2. In the bottom of the seventh inning DH Patrick Leyland (1-4) singled home RF Ben Verlander (1-4) who led off the inning with a single to make the game 8-3. 2B Javier Azcona (1-1) followed with a three-run home run down the right field line to cut the ValleyCats deficit at 8-6.
The Tigers start up a two-game series with the Vermont Lake Monsters starting tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. at Dodd Stadium. In game one of the two-game series, Connecticut LHP Joe Mantiply (0-1, 3.00) is slated to face off against Vermont LHP Jose Torres (1-0, 1.80). The Connecticut Tigers are the Class-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers and play in the New York-Penn League. The Tigers are in their 4th season at Dodd Stadium. Tickets are now on sale!
