Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

Late night Baseball

Last night's game between the IronBirds and the Staten Island Yankees went 13 innings. The game lasted four hours and one minute. The Yankees won it in walk-off fashion when Yeicok Calderon hit an RBI single to right center field, scoring John Murphy, giving the host Yankees a 3-2 win. In all, there were 13 pitchers used between the two clubs. In his professional debut, Orioles 20th round draft pick Nick Cunningham took the loss. Dillon McNamara got the win, pitching a perfect top of the 13th inning.

Tying a few club records

In last night's game, the IronBirds tied two club records. They used seven pitchers in the game, which had not happened since September 7, 2006 vs. Lowell. They also used 20 players, which ties a record that was last reached July 16, 2005 when the IronBirds played at the Tri-City ValleyCats. The four pinch hitters was also record tying. That record was set on July 16, 2005 as well.

All good things must come to an end

IronBirds infielder Hector Veloz saw his seven game hitting streak come to an end last night. He came in as a pinch hitter in the 10th inning, and, in two at-bats, was 0-2 with a fly out and a strike out.

Vega's bat is heating up

Anthony Vega, who got the start in center again yesterday, was 3-5 last night. He had a single in the third, homered in the fifth, and had a ground rule double in the seventh. He raised his batting average up to .278 with five hits in 18 at bats. He has hit safely in the last three games he's played.

On the mound tonight...

RHP Austin Urban will get his second start of the season tonight. Urban pitched the first game of the road trip, a 3-0 loss in Brooklyn. In Thursday's game, Urban went four and a third innings, allowed six hits, three runs (one earned), walking three and fanning four. The IronBirds lost the game 3-0. The Yankees will counter with RHP Rookie Davis. Davis is 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA after being assigned the loss in Thursday's game against the Hudson Valley Renegades.

See you again, soon...This time at our place!

The IronBirds will head home after tonight's game and begin a five game home stand, where they will face their two most recent opponents. The Cyclones will be in Aberdeen tomorrow and Thursday, while Staten Island will be in town for a three game weekend set beginning Friday.
