Cyclones Clip 'Gades Again

Hudson Valley Renegades News Release

WAPPINGERS FALLS, NY (June 24, 2013) - The game began the way Sunday's loss in Brooklyn ended: with rain. A two hour and five minute rain delay caused Monday night's game between the Cyclones and Renegades to end just before midnight, as Brooklyn escaped Dutchess Stadium with a 3-2 victory. For the first time this season, the Hudson Valley offense is struggling, but there is no need to hit the panic button. Despite losses in two straight, both games were decided by a run and the 'Gades held leads in each one. Last night, the story for the Cyclones was James Roche. This time around, however, it was highly touted prospect Gavin Cecchini who stole the show late in the ballgame.

John Farrell's second start of the season did not go the way he envisioned after a Jared King single with the bases loaded made it 1-0 Brooklyn in the first. Farrell would then strike out Matt Oberste for the first out before his defense, as it has done thus far, provided a big play with runners on base. Alex Sanchez rocketed a line drive to third baseman Jonathan Quiñonez, who made the catch before doubling up L.J. Mazzilli at second base to get out of the inning.

The Renegades struck with two outs in the third off Cyclones starter Robert Gsellman, starting with a single by Julian Ridings. Patrick Blair singled him to third, allowing Ariel Soriano to serve a two-run single into left to give Hudson Valley a 2-1 lead. But the offense would go quietly after the quick outburst, managing just three more hits the rest of the way.

Brooklyn didn't take long to answer against long reliever Eli Echarry, who walked Oberste on four pitches to begin the fourth. Sanchez made solid contact for the second straight at bat, finding a hole in left center to stroke an RBI double to the wall to tie the score at 2.

A long time passed before either team would score again. Aside from Echarry coming up with another huge outing from the bullpen, the only other bright spot for the Renegades was the debut of rookie Cory Jordan. The Rays 35th round pick allowed a hit and a walk in the seventh and eighth innings, but racked up four strikeouts including the side in the seventh.

The Cyclones would eventually break the tie in the ninth against Harmen Sidhu, who like Jordan, was making his professional debut. A leadoff walk by Ismael Tijerina preceded a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch that moved him to third. Cecchini then lifted a deep fly ball to left that allowed Tijerina to tag up and score the eventual winning run.

Hudson Valley threatened in the bottom of the ninth with the tying run at second and one out. Blair ripped a hard grounder to third that ricocheted off Tijerina to the shortstop Cecchini, who found the ball and threw out Ismel Antunez at third for the second out. Ariel Soriano would then fly out to end the game, as the Cyclones jumped over the .500 mark again to 4-3.

NOTES: Farrell only pitched the one inning and did not return after the rain delay halted play after the top of the first...Omar Narvaez picked up his first hit of the year with a single in the second...Antunez finished 2-for-3 after going hitless in three at bats in his only other game on June 18 in Aberdeen...the Renegades were 0-for-2 with the bases loaded and two outs in the fifth and seventh.

The series wraps up Tuesday night at The Dutch as the Cyclones go for the sweep at 7:05 PM. LHP Ben Griset (0-0, 0.00) will try and get the 'Gades back on track against Cyclones righty Miller Diaz (0-1, 3.86) Great seats are still available for the final game of this series so call 845-838-0094 or visit www.hvrenegades.com to purchase your tickets now.
